The Norm Smith Medal is presented to the player judged to be best on ground during the Grand Final and is named after legendary Melbourne Football Club player and Coach Norm Smith.

The award was first presented in 1979 and is voted on 3-2-1 style by a five person panel usually consisting of ex-players/coaches and media profiles.

Now retired Richmond Tigers player Dustin Martin has won the most Norm Smith Medals with three (2017, 2019 and 2020). In the award's history the medal has been given to a player of the losing team only four times, most recently in 2005 to Chris Judd (West Coast) in their loss to Sydney.

Since the 2000 Grand Final, the Half Forward position has been the most successful at winning the Norm Smith Medal, taking the award in 10 out of 25 games.

Three of the last four winners (Bobby Hill, Isaac Smith and Dustin Martin) have all been named to start at the Half Forward position.
