Brisbane Lions vs Geelong Preview

The Round 3 contest pits the premiers, Brisbane, up against Geelong, with the two meeting for the first time since the Preliminary Final in 2024.

That resulted to a win for the Lions in what was a classic finals contest. They went on to take out the premiership and head into this encounter unbeaten in 2025 with wins over Sydney by four in Round 1 and West Coast by 19.

Geelong were dominant in their Round 1 encounter against Fremantle, taking that out by 78 points but failed to back that performance last weekend with a seven-point loss to StKilda.

The Cats trailed by 41 points in the third term before mounting a fightback. They had their chances in the last term but could not reel in the Saints.

The Lions will be tough to beat on their home deck but can ill afford a slow start, as was the case against West Coast in Round 2. But with the superior midfield depth, as well as a host of finishers up forward, the can continue their unbeaten run.

  • Brisbane have won 16 of their past 19 matches.
  • 12 of the 16 wins have been by less than 39.5 points.
  • Lachie Neale picked up 35 disposals last weekend.
  • Darcy Wilmot has had 20+ disposals in his two matches in 2025

Head to Head

The two sides have alternated wins the past four times they have played. Brisbane took out a thrilling Preliminary Final at the MCG last season by 10-points before going on to take out the Grand Final.

Geelong defeated Brisbane at the GABBA earlier in 2025 when Brisbane were slow out of the blocks, recording a 26-point victory against an inaccurate Lions outfit.

The past three matches between the two sides have been decided by 26 or less. Brisbane have won two of the past three at the GABBA.

Brisbane Lions Form Analysis

Brisbane have now won 16 of their past 18 matches, a sequence that stretches back to Round 14 last season. 12 of those 16 have been by less than 39.5 points. They have won nine of their past 10 at the GABBA.

The Lions rank 4th for disposals across their past 10 matches and 4th for scoring. In the absence of Joe Daniher, they have shared their goals around this season, booting a combined total of 26 majors. Logan Morris and Callum Ah Chee booted three last weekend.

Lachie Neale bounced back after being tagged out of it in Round 1 with 35 disposals against West Coast. Will Ashcroft and Darcy Wilmot have picked up over 20 in both of their matches.

Brisbane Lions Team News

Brisbane came out unscathed on the injury front in the West Coast Eagles match. They are unlikely to make too many changes to the unbeaten line up. Charlie Cameron is a possible inclusion, depending on a fitness test. Kai Lohmann is recovering from an ankle injury and is an outside chance to be ready.

Geelong Form Analysis

Geelong have won nine of their past 14 matches and are one from two this season. They rank 2nd for goals scored in their past 10 matches. Jeremy Cameron is going at 3+ per game but was quiet on the goals front with just one last weekend when playing further up the ground. Tyson Stengle snagged two. He and Ollie Henry are going at just under two per game in their last 10.

Their focus against the Lions will be winning the contested possessions (ranking 6th over their past 10 matches) and clearances (3rd), banging the ball inside 50 (6th) to provide their range of forwards an opportunity to capitalise.

Geelong Team News

Geelong’s star defender, Tom Stewart, is some hope of playing, despite sustaining a knee injury against St Kilda. Bailey Smith was a late withdrawal from that match with a calf and faces a test this week. His inclusion will be pivotal to the Cats chances. The veteran, Mitch Duncan, is a possible inclusion to help cover the loss of Stewart.
