Brisbane will edge past GWS in what shapes as a danger game for the 2024 premiers.

The Lions are expected to take this one out but have been unconvincing in their premiership defence, coming off a five-point loss to Adelaide last weekend.

They wasted late chances in that game, kicking 0.8 in the final term to 5.0. The Lions now have a win-loss record of 9-3-1 but over the last four weeks are 2-2-1.

GWS have not lived up to early season hype and are in 7th position on the ladder with a 7-6 win-loss record. The Giants went down to Port Adelaide by 16-points last weekend in a game they were expected to win.

But the Giants have proven they are one of the better sides on the road this season and are 4-2 in games outside of Sydney. They defeated Brisbane at the GABBA late last season and have a number of ball-winners that will keep them in the contest. Take the Lions in the 39.5 point range or consider the Giants with the start. Will Ashcroft and Tom Green will find a stack of footy for their respective sides.

  • GWS have won four of six matches outside of Sydney this season.
  • Eight of Brisbane’s nine wins have been in the 1-39 point range in 2025
  • Tom Green has had 30+ disposals in four of his past six matches
  • Will Ashcroft has had 30+ in five of his past seven.

Head to Head

These two sides last met in the Semi Final last season. Brisbane looked dead and buried in that before producing a stunning comeback to win by five points. They were premiers a fortnight later with their victory over Sydney in the decider.

The Giants defeated Brisbane at the GABBA just weeks earlier in Round 22 by 18 points. Tom Green has averaged 33 disposals in his last three matches against the Lions. Charlie Cameron has booted 12 goals for Brisbane from his past four, while Jesse Hogan has booted 11.

Brisbane Lions Form Analysis

Brisbane’s loss to Adelaide was their second in the past five weeks. The other came at the hands of Melbourne at the GABBA (11 points), while they have also registered a draw against North Melbourne in that period. They were unconvincing 18-point winner over Essendon prior to the loss to Adelaide.

Despite their moderate form, they are 3rd for disposals in that period, 4th for inside 50s and 7th for goals. Poor conversion inside 50 has cost them and they are 13th for goals per inside 50. They had their chances last time and kicked 0.8 in the last quarter to the Crows 5.0.

Cam Rayner and Charlie Cameron kicked two goals each against Adelaide. Cameron has kicked six goals in his past three matches. Will Ashcroft picked up 31 disposals, while Hugh McCluggage had 27. Ashcroft has had 30+ in five of his past seven matches. McCluggage has had 25+ in five of his past six. He had 24 in the other.

Brisbane Lions Team News

No injuries for Brisbane out of the Adelaide match. Oscar McInerney may finally make his return but Darcy Fort has been solid in the ruck.

GWS Giants Form Analysis

The Giants are 3-5 in the past eight weeks and were unconvincing three-point winners over lowly Richmond prior to the performance over Port Adelaide. Interestingly, in games outside of Sydney the Giants are 4-2 this season, winning their past two with those coming against Carlton and Geelong.

Against Port Adelaide, the Giants matched the Power in a number of statistcial measures, except where it counted, on the scoreboard. They registered just seven goals. Jesse Hogan and Jake Riccardi booted two each. Hogan has kicked 32 from 10 matches this season.

Tom Green had 31 disposals and has hit the 30+ in four of his past six matches. Lachie Whitfield had 24 disposals against Port Adelaide. He has had 25+ in 11 of 13 matches in 2025, registering 24 in each of the other two.

GWS Giants Team News

Toby Greene was subbed out with a corkie against Port Adelaide and will be assessed at training during the week. Brent Daniels came on as the sub and was excellent in his first game back. Jake Stringer, Stephen Coniglio and Finn Callaghan are among those on the injury list that are getting closer to a return.
