Carlton vs Melbourne Tips & Betting Preview

Two of the more enigmatic teams of the AFL in Carlton and Melbourne take to the Marvel Stadium field on Satuday in Round 2.

These sides haven't played each other at Marvel Stadium since 2009, which did result in a big win for the Blues, however it's impossible to look too much into that with both sides having changed considerably in both personel and on-field fortunes since that occasion.

Despite both teams losing in Round 1, there was merit to both performances against highly credentialed opponents. The Blues fought admirably against last year's premiers in Richmond for a 24 point loss, whilst the Demons headed interstate to tackle a powerful West Coast line-up where they matched the Eagles for the last three quarters, but a slow start ultimately proved too costly.

Cartlon vs Melbourne Head to Head

In what's been very reflective of where both teams have been at in recent times, Melbourne have had the better of Carlton in their last four clashes, however, three of the constests were quite close, most notably the 5 point margin (2019) and 8 point difference (2017).

Cartlon had won five of their six prior contests which makes it all square at five a piece over their last ten matches.

It's 33-27 in Cartlon's favour from their last sixty encounters since 1980.

Carlton vs Melbourne Match Up

Whilst Melbourne have been superior in recent times, both they and Carlton can both be quite hard teams to trust. Arriving here fresh, makes it an interesting contest to sort out.

The obvious advantage for the Demons will be the ruck superiority of one the competition's leading big men in Max Gawn who's likely taking on seven-gamer and ex-Hawthorn depth ruck in Mark Pittonet who'll be asked to fill the big shoes left by the injured Matthew Kreuzer. That's an area the Demons will fancy themselves to gain a big ascendency in.

With Charlie Curnow injured for the Blues, the key pillars of the Melbourne defence in Steven May, Jake Lever and Oscar McDonald will fancy their chances of curtailing Levi Casboult and Harry McKay's influence, while tough small defender in Neville Jetta is likely to go head-to-head with Eddie Betts, which will be a battle worth watching in itself.

Whilst he could very well be a little rusty off a long lay-off, Demons recruit Harley Bennell will look to add outside polish to a Melbourne list that desperately needs it, whereas the speed and ball use from Carlton's Marc Murphy, Sam Walsh, Jack Martin and Kade Simpson from Carlton will aim to find holes in a Demons line-up that is perhaps a little light on for leg speed. They are a team that can regularly turn the ball over by foot.

Verdict

The Max Gawn effect in the ruck has us leaning the Demons way over Carlton this Saturday.

Attacking Mid/Forward Christian Petracca may be another scoring option that the Demons will look to use in this clash.
