Collingwood vs Greater Western Sydney Preview & Betting Tips

Collingwood are set to do battle with the GWS at the MCG in the second semi-final. The winner of this clash will lock horns with defending premiers Richmond for a spot in the AFL Grand Final.

Collingwood Magpies

Collingwood wilted under pressure last week in a loss to the Eagles, 12.14 (86) to 10.10 (70). The Pies will come under intense scrutiny if they bow out of the finals in straight sets after finishing in the top-four; something they haven’t done since 1992.

The Magpies got off to a slow start last week, with the Eagles jumping out to a five-goal lead and a similar performance will take the enthusiasm out of a Collingwood home crowd.

Scott Pendlebury and Steele Sidebottom will be expected to inspire the Pies, with Jordan De Goey providing a target up forward. Collingwood will be feeling the hometown pressure and unless they get off to a fast start, they could be in for a long afternoon at the G.
Greater Western Sydney Giants

GWS stuck to the basics last week to shake up the apple cart against the Swans, with a 10.19 (79) to 4.6 (30) win. Leon Cameron was rewarded last week for bringing back Brett Deledio, Matt De Boer and Toby Greene, with all three having an influence against the Swans.

Stephen Coniglio had 32 disposals against the Demons in round 23, and expect him to provide plenty of drive through the midfield for the Giants.

If the visitors can limit the impact of ruckman Brodie Grundy and convert their chances up forward, then the Giants will cause an upset.
Head-to-Head

Greater Western Sydney got the better of Collingwood in round 2 this season at the MCG, winning 15.5 (95) to 12.7 (79). GWS have won their last two games against the Pies and have a 1-1 record at the home of football in 2018.

Match Up

The Magpies had seven individual goal-scorers in their loss to the Eagles and GWS will need to cut down their opportunities in the middle of the park.

GWS had 63 inside 50’s last week against the Swans and converting that scoring pressure against the Pies will be vital for the visitors. Toby Greene was a star for the Giants last week with three goals and another big performance will set-up a win for GWS.

Key Statistics

  • Collingwood averaged 404.2 disposals per match, ranking them 1st in the AFL.
  • Collingwood are ranked 3rd in attack scoring 90.3 points per match.
  • GWS are ranked 1st in the AFL for clearances per game averaging 39.6 per match.
  • GWS midfielder Stephen Coniglio had 32 disposals in his last trip to the MCG in round 23.
Verdict

The Giants were impressive last week, dismantling the Swans by 49-points and keeping All-Australian skipper Lance Franklin goalless. Leon Cameron’s side have won their last two matches against Collingwood and their midfield have a habit of rising to the occasion.

I’m tipping GWS to cause an upset this week against a home side that will be feeling the pressure at home.
