Collingwood vs Brisbane Preview & Betting Tips

Collingwood host the Brisbane Lions in round 21 of the AFL at Etihad Stadium. The home side will intent on maintaining their grip on September action with a comfortable win.

Collingwood Magpies

Collingwood went down to Sydney in a thrilling two-point loss at the SCG due to the exploits of Lance Franklin. Three consecutive losses at the pointy end of the season would be a disaster for Collingwood’s final chances.

A loss this week would send them out of the top-eight for only the second time this season. Expect the Pies to look to blow the visiting Lions out of the water with a fast start.

Collingwood have the fourth-best attack in the competition, averaging 92-points per match. The home side’s horrific injury list grew last round with Darcy Moore set to miss the clash with a hamstring injury.

Brisbane Lions

Despite a run of three consecutive losses, Chris Fagan’s side continue to show plenty of promise. The Lions went down to North Melbourne last round by 3-points at the Gabba with Cam Rayner missing a set shot on the final siren.

Midfielder Dayne Zorko comes into the match in outstanding form after 35 possession against the Kangaroos. Lions No.1 draft pick Cam Rayner will be desperate to make amends against the Pies after missing the game-winner last week.

Brisbane are likely to include Tom Cutler who missed last weekend's game with suspension.

Head-to-Head

These two sides last clashed in round 7 at the Gabba. On that occasion, Collingwood survived a shoot-out with the Lions to win 19.7 (121) to 18.6 (114).

Match Up

The Lions haven’t been able to claim a win in Melbourne this season and may struggle to match Collingwood’s efficiency in the middle of the ground.

Collingwood ruckman Brodie Grundy is in All-Australian form, with 57 hit-outs last week against the Swans.

Grundy will provide plenty of opportunities for Scott Pendlebury and Steele Sidebottom to punish an in-experienced Brisbane side. The Lions lost their last clash at Etihad by 54-points to North Melbourne and a similar scoreline could be on the cards here.

Key Statistics

  • Collingwood have won their past 4 matches against the Lions.
  • Collingwood are the 4th highest scoring team in the AFL averaging 92 points per match.
  • Collingwood’s Scott Pendlebury is averaging 27.8 disposals per match.
  • The Lions haven’t registered a win in Melbourne in 2018.
  • The Lions are ranked 18th in tackles per match with 58.7.

Verdict

The home side should be able to record a comfortable win against a side that has yet to win in Melbourne this season. The young Lions have shown plenty of promise and were unlucky to not claim a win against North Melbourne.

Nathan Buckley’s side boasts plenty of class through the middle of the park to get over the line. Expect a free-flowing game of footy from a Brisbane side that have improved as the season has progressed.
