Melbourne Demons vs Fremantle Dockers Predictions

Both sides missed the finals this season and look closely matched in their attempts to finish in the eight this campaign. It is a tricky opening game for the Demons and it may be closer than the 12.5-point line that has been set.

The Dockers are tipped to cover the handicap and also are worth a small stake to win.

  • Melbourne Demons had a 9-8 win-loss record last season.
  • Melbourne Demons missed out on the finals by 2 points last season.
  • Melbourne Demons have lost their last 3 Round 1 matches.
  • Melbourne Demons have not covered a -12.5 handicap in 5 of their last 6 matches.
  • Fremantle Dockers had a 7-10 win-loss record last season.
  • Fremantle Dockers won the only meeting last season 47-33.

Head to Head

These two sides have shared three wins each across the last six meetings. In the only clash last year, the Dockers won a low-scoring affair 47-33.

Melbourne Demons Form

Wins in their last two matches of the season were not enough as the ninth-placed Demons fell short of the finals by one place and two points.

They won 79-74 in a crucial game with GWS Giants and 68-49 against the Essendon Bombers, but it wasn't enough to finish in the eight.

Simon Goodwin's side warmed up for the season with a heavy Community Series defeat to Western Bulldogs.

They were no match for the Dogs, who ran out 106-67 winners in the pre-season match.

Melbourne Demons Team News

Ben Brown has joined from North Melbourne to bolster the forward line, but he is out for the opening month with a knee injury.

Mitch Brown (calf), Joel Smith (finger) and Jay Lockhart (groin) are also ruled out.

Christian Salem and Angus Brayshaw have been passed fit, while Jack Viney, Jake Melksham and Michael Hibberd will play in the VFL this weekend.

Fremantle Dockers Form

Fremantle were never a threat for the finals last season, but it was a campaign built on solid defence and should stand them in good stead for 2021.

The Dockers are a year better in terms of experience and signed off the campaign with wins over the Demons and North Melbourne before losing to Western Bulldogs.

In the build up to the new season, they were beaten 67-57 by the West Coast Eagles in the Community Series.

Fremantle Dockers Team News

Michael Walters (hamstring), Rory Lobb (knee), Mitch Crowden (ankle) and Bailey Banfield (leg) are all missing for the season opener.

Jesse Hogan has left for GWS Giants, but the Dockers have added plenty of young talent to their squad.

Heath Chapman will be the one making his debut amongst the emergencies.
