Essendon vs Hawthorn Predictions

Two much changed sides clash in Round 1 without any major expectations this season. Hawthorn picked up Tom Phillips after losing Isaac Smith to Geelong over the trade period.

Essendon also had big losses over the trade period losing Joe Daniher, Adam Saad and Orazio Fantasia all to rival clubs, but did gain three top 10 draft picks. The Bombers are the value to make a winning start.

  • Both sides missed the finals last season
  • Essendon Bombers have won the last 2 matches against Hawthorn.

Head-to-Head

Essendon has won three of their last five clashes against Hawthorn, including winning the last two. The latest came in August last year by 16 points in what was a dominant second half after a slow start to the match.

Essendon Form

The Bombers did not finish off the 2020 season in great style, losing nine of their final 10 matches.

But that one win did come against Hawthorn which will be in the back of both sides minds.

They gave Geelong Cats a good scare in the pre-season Community Series when only beaten by seven points in a 79-72 game.

Inaccurate kicking cost them dearly in that match. With nine goals and 18 points next to their name, they should have won the match with a better performance in front of goal.

If the Bombers straighten up their kicking boots, they will have plenty of chances to win this game.

Essendon Team News

Michael Hurley, James Stewart, Jake Stringer and David Zaharakis are all unavailable to play in Round 1, leaving room for the three new players Archie Perkins and Nik Cox to make their debuts.

They may lack experience but the class could be there with the draftees.

Hawthorn Form

After kicking off last season well, the Hawks were poor for the rest of the campaign with inconsistency the biggest frustration.

There were games where Hawthorn were super competitive against good sides, but others in which they were rolled by teams such as woonden spooners Adelaide Crows who had not won a game all season.

A positive sign coming into this season was that they did beat up the Kangaroos by nearly 40 points in a Community Series match in which new recruit Tom Phillips dominated with 30 disposals and a goal.

He will make his official debut this weekend and hope to be the class that Hawthorn seemingly lack.

Hawthorn Team News

Their injury list is bigger than a six-year-old's list to Santa with Hawks dropping like flies.

Jack Gunston is still at least a month away from returning with a back injury.

Jon Patton is under investigation at the moment and will not be playing, while James Sicily is out indefinitely.

Chad Wingard is unlikely to play Round 1 but looks the one to come back for round two or three.
