Geelong enjoy a great chance to make it back-to-back wins when they take on an out of sorts GWS outfit at GMHBA Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Cats almost let slip a three goal lead with just minutes to play against Collingwood in Round 8 with the Magpies Jack Crisp missing a goal after the siren, resulting in a three-point win for blue and white hoops.

That puts Geelong at 5-3 and into 7th spot on the ladder, just ahead of the 8th placed Giants, who are 4-4.

GWS went down to the Sydney Swans by 14 points in their Round 8 match and have now lost their past three.

But they have an on-ball division that can give Geelong a few headaches, particularly if they can find the right formula heading inside 50, while it is worth noting they have an excellent record against Geelong in Geelong.

Take the Giants with the start. Lachie Whitfield should find plenty of the footy, while Toby Greene will be amongst the goals.

  • GWS have won their past four against Geelong at GMHBA Stadium
  • Toby Greene had 24 disposals and kicked two goals the last time the two sides met.
  • Greene has kicked eight from his past three matches against Geelong
  • GWS top the competition for disposals

Head to Head

The Giants have won their past two against Geelong and are one of few sides that have a strong record at GMHBA Stadium, having won their past four at the venue.

Last year, Toby Greene was the difference with 24 disposals and two goals in the four-point win in Round 11. He has kicked eight from his past three against Geelong.

Lachie Whitfield has averaged 29.5 disposals in his past four matches against the Cats, while Tom Green has averaged 27 from his past four. Jeremy Cameron has booted 10 goals in his past four matches against the Giants

Geelong Cats Form Analysis

Geelong have won four of their past five matches, bouncing back after a Round 7 defeat to Carlton before their win last weekend over the Magpies.

They have relied on Bailey Smith’s overlap run to pump the ball forward. The former Bulldog is averaging over 30 disposals this season and had 34 against the Magpies. Geelong are a low disposal side (16th for disposals) but transition quickly from defence (4th) and are dangerous when inside 50, ranking 2nd for goals per inside 50.

Patrick Dangerfield was huge in that win with 29 disposals and some clutch efforts in the last quarter. He has kicked 16 goals this season, while Jeremy Cameron has booted 18.

Geelong Cats Team News

Reece Stanley will miss with a hamstring injury. The Cats have a number of players on the sidelines, including Grian Myers and Tom Stewart.

GWS Giants Form Analysis

GWS opened up with four wins from their first five matches but have struggled to connect with their forwards in their three recent losses, averaging just 63 points per game in the past three rounds. They won the disposal count and matched the Swans for inside 50s but that did not translate into a winning score.

Over the course of the season, GWS top the competition for disposals but are 13th for clearances and 12th for inside 50s.

Tom Green and Lachie Whitfield both average over 30 disposals per game. Jesse Hogan has kicked 18 goals from five matches, while Toby Greene has 15 from eight.

GWS Giants Team News

Toby Bedford suffered blurred vision after a hit against Sydney and will be assessed during the week at training. Brent Daniels and Stephen Coniglio continue to miss. Cody Angove is a chance to debut after some solid form in the VFL.
