Hawthorn can bounce back with a win in front of what should be a big crowd at the MCG on Easter Monday.

The Hawks claimed their first four matches this season then were completely blown away early on by Port Adelaide in Gather Round, trailing by 71 points at one stage before clawing that margin back late in the game to 30.

The brown and gold now have a win-loss record of 4-1, one game clear of Geelong, who are 3-2. The Cats opened up Gather Round with a 19-point win over the Adelaide Crows in a high scoring affair.

That came on the back of some big games up forward from Patrick Dangerfield and Jeremy Cameron, who booted four goals apiece.

The Hawks will need to start better in this game and get back to the MCG for the first time since Round 3. They have won their past eight at the home of footy by an average margin of 45 points.

This will be alot closer than that but with a number of key players finishing off well in the loss to Port, the Hawks can get the job done here.

Jai Newcombe and James Worpel will find plenty of the footy, while Jeremy Cameron will be a focal point up forward for the Cats.

  • Hawthorn have won their past eight at the MCG by an average margin of 45 points.
  • Jai Newcombe comes off 28 disposals last weekend.
  • James Worpel averaged 30 disposals in the two matches between the two sides last season.
  • Jeremy Cameron has kicked 16 goals in his past four matches against Hawthorn.

Head to Head

Geelong have won five of the past six matches against Hawthorn, including the last three. The Cats took out the Easter Monday clash last season by 36 points before handing the Hawks a 51-point defeat at GMHBA Stadium in Round 17.

Jeremy Cameron has kicked 16 goals in his past four matches against Hawthorn. Dylan Moore has booted six from his past four against the Cats. Tom Stewart averaged 25 disposals in the two games last season, while James Worpel averaged 30.

Geelong Cats Form Analysis

The Cats have responded in recent weeks with wins over Melbourne by 39-points and Adelaide by 19. Their losses were both by under 10 points, coming against Brisbane and St Kilda.

Chris Scott’s side will look to use the ball by foot, ranking 2nd for kicks and 17th for handballs. They are 15th for disposals but top the competition for marks. They will look to dominate the Hawks in the air with intercept defenders, while Jeremy Cameron will be a presence up forward.

Cameron and Dnagerfield have kicked 11 goals from their five matches, contributing to the Cats success up forward, ranking 3rd for scoring this season. Bailey Smith has been prominent in setting things up further up the ground and is averaging 30 disposals per game this season.

Geelong Cats Team News

Tom Stewart will return for the Monday clash, while Jake Kolodjashnij is edging closer to a return. Jack Henry will miss another couple of weeks with a hamstring injury.

Hawthorn Hawks Form Analysis

Despite sitting at 4-1, Hawthorn are struggling in a number of key areas, ranking 14th for disposals and 16th for clearance differential. They have been relying on their slick ball movement to kick winning scores- that was shut down in the first half against Port Adelaide.

Jai Newcombe had 29 disposals against the Power, while young guns in Cam Mackenzie and Josh Ward are averaging 20+ this season.

Jack Gunston wound back the clock last weekend with six goals and has 10 from his three matches in 2025. Mabior Chol and Dylan Moore have seven from five with the Hawks ranking 7th for points scored this season.

Hawthorn Hawks Team News

Connor Macdonald is set to return from an ankle injury, while Jack Scrimshaw will add flexibility to the backline and is due to return from suspension. Interesting to see where James Sicily lands after being switched forward at times this season.
