The Gold Coast Suns can bounce back as AFL Round 9 action heads to Darwin on Saturday night.

The Suns were no match for Brisbane last weekend, going down by 17 points in wet conditions at the GABBA. They are now 5-2 after seven matches.

On the same weekend, the Western Bulldogs chalked up a 91-point win over Port Adelaide in Ballarat, dominating the clearance and disposal numbers to register 67 inside 50s to 41. Bailey Dale and Ed Richards both had 30+ disposals, while Tim English was dominant in the ruck.

The battle between the respective midfields shapes as a beauty and the Suns will need Matt Rowell to bounce back after a quiet match last weekend.

Gold Coast have been hard to beat in Darwin in recent times, winning their past six at the venue by an average margin of 49 points. The Bulldogs came close in 2023 with a seven-point loss.

We might see a similar result in what shapes to be a close one.

Gold Coast have won five of seven. They have played just two of last year’s finalists this season, for a win over injury depleted Sydney, as well as last week’s loss to Brisbane.

The Suns have been a high scoring side in 2025, ranking 2nd for points per game. But they could only manage nine scoring shots in the tough conditions at the GABBA last weekend. At the other end, the Suns rank 3rd for fewest points conceded and 2nd for least inside 50s conceded.

Their midfield had their colours lowered last weekend. Noah Anderson is averaging 29 disposals, while Touk Miller is at 26. John Noble has provided plenty of run off the backline and is another over 25.

Western Bulldogs Form Analysis

The Western Bulldogs come in with some hot form, taking out their past three matches by an average margin of 64 points. This has coincided with Marcus Bontempelli’s return to the side.

The skipper is averaging 25 disposals from his three matches, while Tom Liberatore, Bailey Dale and Ed Richards are all at 25+. The Dogs rank 3rd in the competition for disposals and points per game, while they are 2nd for inside 50s and clearances.
