GWS Giants vs Brisbane Lions Preview
Brisbane will bounce back with a win over GWS in AFL Round 11.
The Lions went down to Geelong by 41 points last weekend and sit seventh on the ladder with a 6-4 win-loss record, while GWS are 4-6 after their 17-point loss to West Coast.
The Giants have a strong recent record against Brisbane but have been well below their best in 2026 and continue to battle inconsistency across all areas of their game.
Their ball use and back-half transition, normally one of the side’s biggest strengths, have let them down and that shapes as a major concern against Brisbane, who remain one of the competition’s best pressure and turnover teams when fully switched on.
Chris Fagan won’t be hitting the panic button heading into
Round 11 and his side will benefit from having a longer break, while they should also regain some important experience, with Dayne Zorko expected to return after being managed last week, while Jarrod Berry is another possible inclusion.
The Lions have looked at their best this season when they have been able to control territory through pressure around the contest before releasing their runners from half-back, and that game style should stack up well against a GWS side that has struggled under sustained pressure in recent weeks.
The Giants still possess enough talent to remain dangerous. Clayton Oliver continues to dominate around stoppage, Lachie Ash has been prolific across half-back and Toby Greene always threatens in big games. But Brisbane’s midfield depth, contested work and ability to punish turnover should prove decisive over four quarters.
Logan Morris looms as a major factor again in attack. The young forward has kicked 10 goals across the past three rounds and continues to grow in confidence as a key target inside 50. Brisbane’s forward mix should create enough opportunities for him to hit the scoreboard multiple times against a Giants defence that could still be without Sam Taylor.
At the other end, Lachie Whitfield shapes as a likely bounce-back candidate after being well held against West Coast. He remains central to the Giants ability to generate run and transition from defence and we can expect the experienced defender to respond with a much stronger performance back at ENGIE Stadium.
The Giants are capable of making this competitive at home, but Brisbane look the more reliable and complete side heading into the clash. Take the Lions in the 1-39 point bracket, with Logan Morris to be a factor in front of goal, while Lachie Whitfield can bounce back for the Giants after a quieter outing last weekend.
- Brisbane were winners the last time they played at ENGIE Stadium, with that coming in the 2024 Finals Series.
- The Lions are 6-4 in 2026, while the Giants are 4-6.
- Logan Morris has kicked 10 goals in the past three rounds.
- Lachie Whitfield had 33 disposals the last time the two sides met.
Head to Head
GWS have won three of the past four meetings between the two sides and were 11-point winners the last time they met, which came in Round 14 last season at the GABBA. The Giants kicked 17.5 to Brisbane’s 13.18, with inaccuracy costing the Lions. Brisbane staged a remarkable comeback the last time they played GWS at ENGIE Stadium, getting up by five points in the 2024 Finals Series.
Standout player performances in recent head-to-head clashes have come from:
- Lachie Whitfield (Giants) – 33 disposals the last time the two sides met
- Dayne Zorko (Lions) – 25+ disposals in his past two against GWS
- Jesse Hogan (Giants) – 14 goals in his past three against Brisbane
- Aaron Cadman (Giants) – five goals in the most recent meeting
- Toby Greene (Giants) – 19 goals from his past seven against Brisbane
The Giants sit at 4-6 and their season is beginning to slip away. Injuries took their toll in the early rounds, but there were seemingly few excuses for their performance against West Coast, where they went down by 17 points. Prior to that, they produced an unconvincing 14-point win over Essendon.
Against the Eagles, Clayton Oliver had 38 disposals and 12 clearances, while Lachie Ash gathered 34 disposals across half-back, but several key players, including Finn Callaghan and Lachie Whitfield, were down on output. Jake Stringer, Max Gruzewski and Brent Daniels each kicked two goals.
Oliver has recorded 30 or more disposals in six of his past eight matches, while Ash has had 25 or more in eight of his past nine, hitting 30+ in four of those. Stringer has kicked nine goals in the past four rounds and Gruzewski has booted two goals in each of his past two matches. GWS return to ENGIE Stadium, where they have won two of three matches in 2026.

Jesse Hogan and Leek Aleer are both a chance to return and their possible inclusions would significantly strengthen the Giants. Sam Taylor is expected to need another week, while Jack Ough continues his excellent VFL form and will come into consideration.
The reigning premiers have won six of 10 this season and are still searching for consistency in their bid for a third straight premiership. Last weekend, they were outplayed by Geelong in the Grand Final rematch, with the Cats proving too strong in a 41-point victory.
There were already concerns heading into that match after Brisbane took its foot off the pedal late against Carlton in Round 9, giving up a 48-point lead before eventually winning by 11.
Darcy Wilmot had 30 disposals against Geelong, while Lachie Neale and Levi Ashcroft both had 28, but the Lions were pressured into frequent turnovers and lacked their usual intensity, recording just 45 tackles to Geelong’s 64.
Charlie Cameron kicked three goals, while Logan Morris added two. Morris has kicked two or more goals in eight of his past nine matches and has 23 from nine games this season, while Cameron has kicked two or more in eight of 10 matches for a total of 23 goals.
