GWS Giants vs Hawthorn Preview

The Hawks can take a big step towards the finals by moving into the top-eight for the first time this season with a win against GWS.

  • Hawthorn have won 10 of their past 12 matches.
  • Hawthorn got a 56-point victory over GWS last time they played at Manuka Oval in 2019.
  • The Hawks average 93.41 points in attack over their past 12 games.
  • GWS have conceded an average of 86.16 points in their past 6 matches.

Head to Head

The Hawks broke a three game losing streak against the Giants back in round 13.

They took the game over from GWS late in the third and ended up on the right side of the six lead changes in the fourth quarter, getting up 85-79 with a late goal from Luke Breust.

GWS Giants Form

After a rough patch in their season GWS are beginning to live up to the potential and expectation they had at the beginning of the year, winning their past 4 matches after a 3-7 period there.

Significant victories against Carlton, Gold Coast and Melbourne last week the Giants are now firmly in the fight for a top-four finish and even a home final in week one, however, all that can change with another dip in form to close out the season.

The Giants have been playing a much more protective style of footy lately and are now ranked fourth in the AFL with a contested possession percentage as low as 36.9%, while they have been savvy taking the ball from their opponents in tough situations.

GWS rank fourth with an average of 69.2 intercept possessions per game and are a top-two side with 93.5 ground ball gets and are the best team in the AFL with 26.6 hard gets per match.

GWS Giants Team News

Jake Ricciardi will miss the match and possibly the rest of the home and away season with a dislocated finger.

Stephen Coniglio and Josh Kelly have been ruled out this week.

Hawthorn Form

The Hawks are still flying and are eating up their prey over the past two weeks with two 66-point wins over Collingwood and Adelaide and are now only out of the eight on percentage, which they are working on obviously.

They are definitely the biggest surprise of the season for mine, especially if they can finish the year with this incredible form and feature in the finals for a week or two. This run of 10 wins from 12 games is something special for this young team who have put the league on notice for the future.

Hawthorn’s possession and disposal game is well above their years, ranked third in the AFL with a 74.2% disposal efficiency. What is also impressive is how the Hawks control the territory, also ranked fourth in the league with an average of just 48.5 opponents inside 50s per game.

Hawthorn Team News

Josh Bennetts requires shoulder surgery and will be out for the remainder of the season.
