GWS Giants vs Western Bulldogs Predictions

While I expect the Bulldogs to continue their near-flawless start to the season with another win, a cold night in Canberra may level the playing field somewhat. In a game in which the Dogs' scoring prowess might be nullified a bit, the Giants are tipped with a +19.5 start.

  • GWS Giants have won their last 2 matches.
  • GWS Giants have won their last 2 matches against Western Bulldogs at Manuka Oval.
  • GWS Giants have covered a +19.5 handicap line in 5 of their last 6 matches against Western Bulldogs.
  • Western Bulldogs are 5-0 for the season for the first time since 1946.
  • Western Bulldogs have won 8 of their last 9 matches.

Head To Head

Western Bulldogs hold a 6-4 head to head advantage over GWS Giants, including winning last year's only meeting with a low-scoring 57-33 victory.

GWS Giants have had marginally the better of things in recent seasons after winning four of the last six clashes.

GWS Giants Form

GWS Giants have breathed fire into their season with two big wins in the last two weeks.

The Giants were impressive 90-60 winners over Collingwood at the MCG in Round 4 and proved that was no fluke in last week's Sydney derby against the Swans.

GWS trailed by 10 points with four minutes remaining but pulled off a 71-69 victory against the previously unbeaten Swans in the Battle of the Bridge.

Having lost their opening three games to St Kilda, Fremantle Dockers and Melbourne Demons, the Giants now find themselves at 2-3 and bidding to knock over another unbeaten side this week.

GWS Giants Team News

Harry Perryman comes back into the Giants side, but injured Lachie Whitfield, Stephen Coniglio, Matt de Boer and Phil Davis are all still missing.

Sam Reid was forced off in the win over the Sydney Swans and is ruled out.

Matt Flynn returns in place of Shane Mumford, while Jesse Hogan kicked three goals in the VFL and is among the emergencies.

Western Bulldogs Form

There has been no stopping the Bulldogs so far this season with a perfect 5-0 record and two 60-plus points victories along the way.

The Dogs thumped Essendon Bombers 167-63 in Round 3 and were equally impressive in demolishing Gold Coast Suns 118-56 last weekend.

Having also accounted for finals contenders Collingwood, West Coast Eagles and Brisbane Lions so far, it is easy to see why Luke Beveridge's side are all the rage for the premiership.

Western Bulldogs rank number one for points scored (527) and points conceded (295), making them the team no one wants to play.

Western Bulldogs Team News

Bailey Williams is out for the Bulldogs after suffering a shoulder injury in last week's win over the Gold Coast Suns.

His absence paves  the way for a return to the side for Caleb Daniel after he sat last weekend out due to concussion.

Jordan Sweet impressed last week, but is one of five changes in total. Lewis Young, Patrick Lipinski and Ben Cavarra are all dropped, and Lachie McNeil is given a rest.

There is a return from a long injury absence for Lin Jong and Zaine Cordy, Stefan Martin and Laitham Vandermeer are recalled.

Verdict

Western Bulldogs are flying and deserve their strong favouritism. But they don't have a great record at Manuka Oval, and the Giants with a more-than-three-goal start of +19.5 are the bet. Under the total points is also tipped with cold conditions expected in Canberra.
