Hawthorn will topple the Adelaide Crows in Friday night footy at Launceston.

Both sides come in with stirring wins in Round 13. Hawthorn bounced back from a three-match losing streak by defeating the Western Bulldogs by 22 points, while Adelaide booted five last quarter goals to topple the reigning premiers, Brisbane, by five-points at the Adelaide Oval.

Different kettle of fish for the Crows outside of Adelaide and they need to overcome a moderate interstate record of just two wins from five this season. Hawthorn have won their past seven in Launceston and easily accounted for the Crows in two matches last season.

The Hawks defenders will match up well on the Crows high scoring forwards, while at the other end, Mabior Chol is in career best form. Take the Hawks in what should be a close one. Josh Ward will be prominent for the brown and gold, while Rory Laird will provide opportunities for the visitors.

Head to Head

Hawthorn have won three of the past four matches between the two sides, including both matches last year. They were 66-point winners against Adelaide at the Adelaide Oval back in Round 20 and 27-point winners in Round 12 at the MCG.

Interestingly, the Crows were three point winners at UTAS Stadium in 2023 with Darcy Fogarty sinking a late goal from a tight angle.

Hawthorn Hawks Form Analysis

Hawthorn lost three in succession prior to their win over the Bulldogs, going down to some of the top sides in the competition in Gold Coast, Brisbane and Collingwood. Interestingly, the Hawks are 0-4 against sides above them on the ladder this season.

The Hawks were 12-point winners over GWS at UTAS Stadium in Round 4 this season. They have won their past seven at the venue since going down to the Crows there in 2023.

Hawthorn’s performance against the Bulldogs was built on getting back to the basics, by boosting their pressure rating and tackling numbers. Mabior Chol cashed in up forward with four goals. He has 24 majors from 13 games this season, while Jack Gunston has booted 26 from 10.

Josh Weddle was outstanding in defence against the Bulldogs, while Josh Ward (28 disposals) and Jai Newcombe (27) produced in the middle. Ward has had 25+ in his past two matches and is beginning to deliver on the talent that saw him get snapped up at pick #7 in the 2021 National Draft.

James Sicily missed the win against Adelaide due to a hip issue. Nick Watson was out with an illness, while Jack Scrimshaw was managed. Interesting to see who makes way for that duo, should they come back into the side. James Worpel was subbed out early against the Dogs with a corkie but is expected to be ok.

Adelaide Crows Form Analysis

Adelaide’s win over Brisbane made it five from their past six with their only loss in that period coming against the ladder leaders, Collingwood, by 10 points at the MCG. The Crows thumped Sydney by 90 points and West Coast by 66 prior to the Lions win.

In the last five weeks, the Crows rank 5th for inside 50s and 3rd for scoring. This comes despite being ranked just 17th for disposals. Rory Laird (25 disposals) was the only Crow to register over 20 in the win against Brisbane. Josh Rachele booted three goals and has 11 from his past three matches.

The Crows have travelled outside of South Australia on five occasions this season and have won just two of those matches, against Sydney and Essendon.

James Peatling faces a one-match suspension for a dangerous tackle over Lachie Neale in the win over the Lions. Lachlan Sholl is a possible replacement and has some solid form in the SANFL. Nick Murray is edging close to a return from injury.
