Hawthorn vs Collingwood Predictions

Pride is the only thing on the line at the MCG with Hawthorn and Collingwood both well out of finals calculations, albeit a win for either side rules them out of the wooden spoon race.

Given there could well be some leeway in firm defensive plans from both coaches this late in the year, the over 157.5 total match points can be covered.

Head to Head

From their last 10 matches, Hawthorn comfortably lead the head to head battle 8-2 over Collingwood.

Collingwood defeated Hawthorn by 32 points in Round 6 last season, which was the last game between these two sides.

Hawthorn Form

Hawthorn arguably have the weakest list in the competition, but they can still rise to an occasion with a Round 13 win over the Swans, a draw against Melbourne Demons and an upset win over the Lions last week.

With several outs in Round 21 including the injured Luke Breust, who is still easily their best forward, the forward half will rely be on big man Ben McEvoy playing more minutes in attack along with the classy Chad Wingard.

While inconsistent, Tim O'Brien and Jacob Koschitzke can both contribute up front and they'll need to, with Collingwood's defence being their strongest two lines.

With 39 goals scored over their last three fixtures, Hawthorn have had no trouble kicking a score of late and the shackles may stay released on this rebuilding squad late in the year.

Hawthorn Team News

Luke Bruest is ruled out with injury and Ned Reeves, Tyler Brockman and Denver Grainger-Barras are all managed.

Damon Greaves is also left out this week.

Jacob Koschitzke, Jonathon Ceglar, Oliver Hanrahan and Harry Morrison come into the Hawks side.

Hawthorn Team List

B: Burgoyne, Hartigan, Frost
HB: Howe, Scrimshaw, Hardwick
C: Shiels, O’Meara, Bramble

F: Wingard, McEvoy, Hanrahan

EMER: Greaves, Morris, Reeves, Brockman

Collingwood Form

The effort and structures have been rock solid for Collingwood all season, but simply they just haven't got the talent to compete for a finals position in 2021.

Following the mid-season departure of Nathan Buckley, the Magpies have recorded two wins under interim coach Robert Harvey, including an upset defeat over West Coast in Round 20.

With 14 goals scored in that 45-point victory, we saw more imagination in attack from Collingwood last week. Given the inexperience in their front half, handing the youngsters some freedom is the right move.

In comparing the best 22 for each team ahead of this game, Collingwood do just shade the Hawks for class/depth and now the challenge is whether they can continue their momentum.

Collingwood Team News

One change sees Beau McCreery come in for Trent Bianco.

Verdict

I'm backing Hawthorn and Collingwood to cover the Over 157.5 Total Match Points at the MCG.

The 25-30 total goal range for this clash could be on the cards if both coaches continue to play open footy at the end of the season, so over 183.5 is worth a smaller play.

Best Bet: Over 157.5 Total Match Points @-108.70 at BetMGM - 4 Units
