AFL Round 9 continues on Thursday with a tasty clash between the Melbourne Demons and Port Adelaide on neutral ground at the Gabba in Brisbane.

The Demons come into the game after winning two of their last three matches, and only narrowly going down to Brisbane last week in a thriller. The Power remain top but are out to get back to winning ways after a disappointing home loss to St Kilda.

Will Port maintain their position on top of the ladder or will Melbourne roar back into finals contention?

Melbourne Demons Form & Team News

Melbourne started off the season poorly, winning just one of the opening four games. But after gritty wins against the Gold Coast Suns and Hawthorn, they are right back into finals contention.
The Dees' effort last week against the second-placed Brisbane Lions had plenty of merit and if they can play like that consistently, the finals don’t seem as far away as a couple of months ago for the Melbourne faithful.

On the selection front, Tom McDonald looks likely to come back into the side after an eye injury, which might see youngster Luke Jackson find himself out of the side.

Nathan Jones and James Harmes have been disappointing lately and it wouldn’t shock to see one of those two left out.

Port Adelaide Form & Team News

Port Adelaide sit top of the ladder after eight games and in a striking position to give the shortened 2020 Premiership season a real shake.

The Power won their first four matches, however they have struck a lull in the past fortnight. They were relatively poor against Carlton a fortnight ago, before being easily accounted for by St Kilda last week.

It will be interesting to see what Ken Hinkley does at the selection table. With Scott Lycett still unavailable, Peter Ladhams should hold his spot. Todd Marshall will go out of the side after suffering a thumb injury.
Riley Bonner and Justin Westhoff are another two who must be testing the patience of Hinkley after having a poor few weeks of football.

Melbourne Demons vs Port Adelaide Match Up

The battle of the big men holds the key to this contest.

Max Gawn is the best ruckman in the competition at the moment and the young Power ruck Peter Ladhams is going to have his work cut out to stop him.

Gawn is a major contender for the Brownlow Medal this season and he has been terrific in almost every game he has played. Ladham has been a project player for Port but he needs to step up and prove he can match it with the best in the competition.
