North Melbourne will be out to register just their second win of the season but the task at hand will be a difficult one against the reigning premiers.

The Kangaroos came close in Round 8 when unable to capitalise on late opportunities against Essendon, going down by three points. They are now 1-7 after eight matches.

Brisbane are off to a flyer in their premiership defence, sitting on top of the ladder at 7-1. They handed the Gold Coast a 17-point defeat at the GABBA last weekend.

The Lions head into this as firm favourites and a feature of their performances this season has been their depth in the middle of the ground. Last weekend, the Ashcroft brothers combined for 63 disposals.

They will provide a stack of opportunities for their forwards against a North Melbourne side that rank poorly for defence.

Expect the Lions to cover the line in this with Lachie Neale amongst the disposals and Charlie Cameron continuing his form from last week that saw him boot three goals.

  • Brisbane have won their past seven against North Melbourne
  • The last three of those have been by an average margin of 88 points.
  • North Melbourne rank 17th in the competition for fewest points conceded and 16th for inside 50s.
  • Charlie Cameron has booted 10 goals from his past four matches against the Roos.

North Melbourne have lost six games in a row since defeating Melbourne back in Round 2. They conceded some big scores in a number of those but have tightened up in recent weeks, giving up 97 to Port Adelaide in their nine point loss and 65 to Essendon in the three point loss. They rank 17th in the competition for fewest points conceded and 16th for inside 50s.

Harry Sheezel is averaging 30 disposals per game this season, while the former Bulldog, Caleb Daniel, averages 27. Nick Larkey has kicked 20 goals from eight matches.

Brisbane Lions Form Analysis

Brisbane’s only loss for the season came against Collingwood in Round 6, going down by 52. Since then, they have knocked over St Kilda by 45 and Gold Coast by 17. The Lions have won 11 of their past 13 matches at Marvel Stadium.

The Lions form this season has come on the back of some clearance domination, ranking on top of the competition for this measure, while they are 4th for inside 50s.

They have a host of players that are capable of finding the footy, led by Lachie Neale and Will Ashcroft, who are both averaging 27 disposals per game. Eric Hipwood has kicked 16 goals from eight matches this season.

Brisbane Lions Team News

Sam Day will miss for Brisbane after injuring his hamstring in the win over the Gold Coast. Kai Lohmann is a chance to come back in. Tom Doedee has had a couple of games back the VFL and will be aiming to squeeze into the side.
