North Melbourne vs Port Adelaide Predictions

#Port Adelaide come off a top of the table finish in 2020, having their season ended in a narrow preliminary final loss to the eventual premiers in Richmond.

Against a North Melbourne team that do lack depth, the Power are expected to start their 2021 season on a strong note. With the handicap set at -33.5, Port Adelaide can cover the line with a big win.

  • North Melbourne have lost 14 of their last 15 matches.
  • North Melbourne won just three matches in the 2020 home and away season.
  • Port Adelaide won 14 games in the 2020 home and away season.
  • Port Adelaide have won their last five Round 1 fixtures by 25+ points each time.
  • Robbie Gray has kicked 3+ goals in Port Adelaide's last two matches at Marvel Stadium.

Head to Head

From their last 10 clashes, Port Adelaide lead the head to head battle 7-3 overall including a 36-point win in Round 16 last season, which was the last time these two sides met.

North Melbourne Form

Following the Round 9 victory over the then hapless Adelaide Crows, North Melbourne struggled to kick a score as the 2020 season wore on, with only percentage saving them from the dreaded wooden spoon.

Beaten by 39 points in their pre-season clash against Hawthorn in the Community Series, it's hard to see 2021 being anymore than a rebuilding year for the Kangaroos.

They are in desperate need of more young talent over the next few years, which they can secure via high picks in the drafts.

A highly regarded General Manager at the Brisbane Lions, David Noble now takes the reins as the senior coach of North Melbourne and he will be looking to blood the youngster's straight away.

North Melbourne Team News

After a frustrating 2020, key forward Ben Brown has left North Melbourne to join Melbourne Demons, as has classy veteran Shaun Higgins, who will finish off his career at Geelong Cats.

Needing all of the established experience they can get, North have been dealt no favours early in the season with Ben Cunnington missing for Round 1. Their best midfielder had injury problems last season and suffered a concussion in a recent intra-club match.

Lachie Young, Tom Powell, Aidan Corr and Jaidyn Stephenson are set to play their first games for the club on Sunday.

Port Adelaide Form

The surprise packet of the 2020 AFL season were Port Adelaide, who thrived under hub life at the Gold Coast and played a consistent brand of footy throughout the year.

A close defeat to eventual premiers Richmond Tigers in a home Preliminary Final will have been burning over the summer.

The Power were comprehensive 116-45 winners over the Adelaide Crows in the Community Series in the build up to the season.

With a very balanced and even playing list that are superbly coached, the weakness of the Power is perhaps a lack of genuine polish.

That is especially the case throughout the midfield where, while there's plenty of star blue collar players in Boak, Wines, Rockliff, none are match winners, and Robbie Gray turns 33 in nine days.

Port Adelaide Team News

Port Adelaide have managed to recruit well, adding key defender Aliir Aliir to the playing roster which does improve them in defence where they appeared to be a little short last season.

Providing he stays sound, Orazio Fantazia is a fantastic addition. A creative forward for Essendon, he can play deeper as a shorter target or as a high half forward, giving them great flexibility.

A big out for the Power is the injured Connor Rozee who is likely to miss the first month of this season with an injured foot.

Verdict

Port Adelaide should be comfortably accounting for North Melbourne, making the -33.5 line an attractive proposition.

For a 60+ blowout, which is possible with the more free flowing footy being played in Round 1, it's worth a smaller play.
