Port Adelaide Power vs Carlton Blues Preview
Carlton’s dream start under their new coach, Josh Fraser, will come to a halt when they take on Port Adelaide in what shapes as an intriguing clash at Adelaide Oval on Saturday evening.
After winning just one of their opening nine matches, the Blues parted ways with Michael Voss prior to Round 10, with Fraser then guiding his side to a 12-point victory over the Western Bulldogs.
Port Adelaide have chalked up just one more win than Carlton this season and sit at 3-7, but they have shown encouraging signs over the past couple of months, winning two matches and losing another three by three points or less.
They can capitalise despite last week’s loss to Gold Coast when matching the Suns for scoring shots and clearance numbers with a slow start costing them in the greasy conditions.
Expect Zak Butters to once again drive Port Adelaide from the midfield. The Power skipper continues to carry enormous responsibility through the centre of the ground and his ability to win contested ball, generate territory and drive repeat inside 50s looms as a major factor against Carlton.
The Blues improved significantly in contested possession and pressure against the Bulldogs, but Port Adelaide’s midfield depth and ability to maintain pressure over four quarters shapes as a tougher challenge.
Their defensive structure has also quietly held up well despite the club’s poor win-loss record. The Power have lost four games by 14 points or less at Adelaide Oval this season and continue to compete strongly behind the ball, particularly in transition defence.
Carlton still have issues connecting cleanly from midfield to attack and may struggle to sustain territory in the
Round 11 roadtrip against a Port Adelaide side that generally defends Adelaide Oval well.
Mitch Georgiades looks well placed to bounce back after a quieter night in Darwin. The slippery conditions made life difficult for key forwards last week, but Port Adelaide’s ability to generate repeat entries at home should give Georgiades far more opportunities. His record against Carlton is outstanding and he shapes as a major threat once again.
Carlton will take confidence from the improvement shown under Fraser, particularly around pressure, contest and transition ball movement. The Blues looked far more connected in the final quarter against the Bulldogs and Harry McKay remains a dangerous focal point inside 50, especially given his strong recent record against Port Adelaide.
But Adelaide Oval has been a difficult venue for Carlton for a long period of time and Port Adelaide appear slightly further advanced in their ability to execute under pressure. Take the Power in the head to head with Georgiades and McKay on for multiple goals at either end.
Port Adelaide were 50-point winners at Adelaide Oval in 2025
The Power have won five of six against Carlton at the venue
Mitch Georgiades has kicked 20 goals from seven matches against Carlton
Harry McKay has kicked 10 goals from his past two against the Power
Head to Head
Carlton were 54-point winners the last time the two sides met, with that clash coming in Round 23 last season at Marvel Stadium, while the Power were 50-point winners in Round 16 at Adelaide Oval. Port Adelaide have won five of the past six meetings against Carlton at Adelaide Oval.
Standout performances in recent head to head meetings have come from;
- Zak Butters (Power) – 29 and 30 disposals in his past two against the Blues
- Mitch Georgiades (Power) – 20 goals from seven matches against Carlton
- Harry McKay (Blues) – seven goals in the most recent meeting and 10 from his past two against Port Adelaide
Port Adelaide sit at 3-7 and are unlucky not to have picked up another win or two, with four of their losses coming by three points or less. Last week they faced a Gold Coast side that is extremely difficult to beat in Darwin, and a poor finish to the second quarter proved costly in the 15.8 (98) to 10.13 (73) defeat.
The Power matched the Suns for scoring shots and led the clearance count but were unable to capitalise in greasy conditions. Their midfield contest work remained strong for long periods, while their inability to finish opportunities and maintain structure late in quarters proved costly.
Zak Butters starred once again with 35 disposals, making it nine straight matches with 30+ disposals. Jase Burgoyne (28 disposals) and Darcy Byrne-Jones (27) were also prominent contributors.
Mitch Georgiades kicked just one goal, ending his streak of kicking 2+ goals in every game this season. The difficult conditions in Darwin did not suit key forwards, but the Power return home where Georgiades has traditionally performed strongly.
Port Adelaide are 2-4 at Adelaide Oval in 2026, although all four losses have come by 14 points or less, including three defeats by three points or fewer.

Lachie Jones will miss with concussion after going down against Gold Coast and will be a significant loss down back. Miles Bergman missed with a toe injury and his availability will be assessed during the week.
Carlton secured their second win of the season with a 12-point victory over the Western Bulldogs, with that result built around dominance in contested possession and clearances, leading to a 55-38 inside 50 advantage.
The Blues trailed at three-quarter time but produced a strong final term, kicking five goals to two and finally reversing the trend of fading late in games.
Carlton’s pressure and contested work lifted significantly under Josh Fraser, while their transition ball movement from half-back also showed improvement. The Blues were able to maintain territory far more effectively than they had earlier in the season and looked far more connected behind the ball.
Patrick Cripps led the way with 29 disposals and two goals after collecting 32 disposals and nine clearances the previous week against Brisbane. Harry McKay also chimed in with two goals, while Matthew Carroll continued his strong season with another influential performance.
McKay has kicked five goals across the past two rounds, while Mitch McGovern leads Carlton’s goalkicking in 2026 with 19 goals from 10 matches.
Carlton have played interstate on four occasions in 2026 and are yet to register a win. They have also lost their past three matches at Adelaide Oval and hold a 1-13 record against Adelaide and Port Adelaide at the venue.
