Hawthorn have a score to settle with Port Adelaide and will continue their unbeaten start to the season.

The Hawks suffered two heartbreaking losses to the Power in 2024, including a three-point thriller in the Semi Final.

But Sam Mitchell’s side have opened up with four wins to start 2025. The most recent of those was a 12-point victory over highly ranked GWS in tough conditions in Tasmania. They come off the bye in Round 4.

Port Adelaide are 1-3. Their only win came against Richmond back in Round 2. Last weekend, it was the Saints that scored an upset at the Adelaide Oval, putting further pressure on coach, Ken Hinkley.

They hold the home ground advantage and were winners with their backs against the wall the last time they played Hawthorn.

But with their big name recruits in action, the Hawks wont let this one slip. Look for Sam Mitchell’s side to capitalise on the turnover. Karl Amon will find plenty of the ball off half-back and Nick Watson can continue his solid recent form. Willie Rioli can provide resistance for the Power.

  • Hawthorn are 4-0 this season, Port Adelaide are 1-3
  • Nick Watson booted four goals the last time the two sides met
  • Karl Amon has had 25+ disposals in two of the four Hawks matches this season
  • Willie Rioli has kicked nine goals in his past three matches against the Hawks

Head to Head

Port Adelaide have won five of the past six matches between the two sides. They met twice in 2024 with the Power snatching a one-point win in Round 10 at the Adelaide Oval before their three-point Semi Final victory.

Jase Burgoyne had 25 disposals in that match for the winners, while Mitch Georgiades booted three goals. Nick Watson snagged four for the Hawks, while Jai Newcombe had 31 disposals.

Willie Rioli has kicked nine in his past three against Hawthorn. The Power have won seven of the nine matches between the two sides at the Adelaide Oval.

Port Adelaide Power Form Analysis

Since their big win over Richmond, Port Adelaide have lost their past two with those coming against Essendon (12 points) and St Kilda (17 points). Despite being on top in the disposal count and inside 50s, they couldn't convert their opportunities against the Saints.

Ollie Lord, Jason Horne-Francis and Mitch Georgiades booted three goals each, but there was only one other goal-kicker on the day, Sam Powell-Pepper. Georgiades has kicked nine goals from his four matches this season.

Port Adelaide still have a strong midfield. Connor Rozee has averaged 29 disposals this season, while Ollie Wines is at 30.25. Zak Butters picked up 30 in his return game. Their issues are at either end of the ground, ranking 13th for scoring and 12th for defence.

Darcy Byrne-Jones will miss due to suspension, which will allow Travis Boak to slot back in. Tom Cochrane is in the mix for another game after making his debut against Essendon a fortnight ago.

Hawthorn Hawks Form Analysis

Hawthorn have overcome a tough draw to start 2025 with three of their four wins coming against finalists from last season.

They were slow out of the blocks when kicking into a fierce breeze at Launceston in Round 3, overcoming a 35-point quarter time deficit to win by 12 against the Giants.

Cam Mackenzie has stepped up in the absence of James Worpel and had 30-disposals in that match, while Jack Gunston snagged two goals. Gunston is one of six Hawks that is averaging 1+ goals per game this season.

The Hawks will look to trouble Port Adelaide with their dynamic ball movement from the back-half. The former Power player, Karl Amon, is one of the better ball users and is averaging 24.5 disposals this season.

Hawthorn Hawks Team News

Big news out of Hawthorn with Will Day set to miss four months with a stress fracture to the foot. James Worpel is set to return to help fill the void in the midfield. Henry Hustwaite will be considered but Worpel will be selected ahead of the emerging Hawk. Connor McDonald is unlikely to be ready in time from his ankle injury.
