Port Adelaide vs Hawthorn Predictions

Hawthorn are a team on a run and they go in as favourites against Port Adelaide, who put in a miserable performances against Geelong in week 1 of the finals. The Hawks to cover the 8.5 points as the favourite and kick on past their team total of 86.5 points.

  • Port Adelaide have an average losing margin on 47.2 at Adelaide oval with the slimmest loss being by 7 points.
  • The Hawks average 20 more possessions a game in 2024 than the Power.
  • Port Adelaide are the most inaccurate team in the AFL kicking at 42.7% accuracy.
  • Hawthorn have kicked over 86.5 points in 9 of their past 7 games and in 13 of their 15 wins this season.

Head to Head

Hawthorn should have had the match in the bag in their round 10 clash with Port at Adelaide Oval, up as much as 41 points late in the third quarter.

It wasn’t the case though with the Power coming home with a wet sail and kicking two goals in the final two minutes of the game to snatch a famous one-point victory.

It was the second consecutive win for the Power over the Hawks, also boasting a 4-2 head to head lead since 2019.

Port Adelaide Form

Port were embarrassed by Geelong in week one of the finals, going down to the Cats by 84 points in a disgraceful showing with the final score ending 138-54.

The Power couldn’t get their hands on the ball with only 35% of the possession in the match and losing the disposal count 368-288 and claiming just 154 uncontested possessions to Geelong’s 229.

When they finally did get the ball they were wasteful with 70 turnovers in the match and converting just 37.7% of their 53 forward entries into points and kicking just 7 goals to 12 behinds in another inaccurate performance.

The challenge for Port Adelaide this week is going to be their mental state. How will they bounce back from such a drubbing in the first week of the finals?

The Early outlook appears good for Zak Butters who pulled up sore after last week’s thumping from Geelong, however, the midfielder is expected to clear the test later in the week.

Hawthorn Form

The Hawks continue to fly with their carefree attitude and focused performance on the field that has them as the most in-form team in the finals in my opinion.

It was just a matter of time before Hawthorn grabbed their game against the Bulldogs by the horns and they never looked back once they took the lead, running away to a 99-62 victory.

The Hawks starved the Bulldogs of the ball, hammering the them in the disposal count 410-326 with Jai Newcombe (35) and Massimo D’Ambrosio (32) leading the way with the team finishing with 75.9% disposal efficiency.

The Hawks also had 60 more uncontested possessions while also winning the contested possession by 25.

The Hawks once again played rebound footy and moved the ball swiftly from the back to a point of attack and the Western Bulldogs could not handle the barrage of energy coming from the young and slick Hawthorn players like Jack Ginnivan and Nick Watson.

Hawthorn Team News

Will Day has been ruled out earlier in the week for the clash against Port, continuing to rehabilitate his shoulder which he injured in round 23 against Richmond.

Cam McKenzie is also expected to miss the match after being ruled out late last week for the Hawks game against the Bulldogs due to a hamstring injury.

Defender Sam Frost has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a stress fracture in his foot.

Verdict

The Hawks are backed to cruise past Port in the end, covering the line as the favourite and scoring over their team total.
