Port Adelaide vs Richmond Preview

Port Adelaide will be out to bounce back after suffering their biggest loss in Ken Hinkley’s time as coach, a 91-point Round 1 drubbing at the hands of Collingwood.

The Power battled in their defensive half, conceding 21 goals. A combination of a lack of personell in their backline, as well as some sloppy defending from their midfielders, were to blame.

They come up a youthful Richmond side that pulled off one of the biggest upsets in recent years byt defeating Carlton in Round 1 by 13 points. The young cubs overcame a 41-point deficit in that match, despite being well-beaten in disposals and inside 50s.

Jack Ross was the star with 28 disposals and two goals, while the No.1 draft pick, Sam Lalor, also booted two.

An interstate trip will be another test for Adem Yze’s developing squad. Interestingly, the Tigers were able to win in Adelaide last year but I expect a bit of a correction this week with the Power in the box seat to turn things around.

Port Adelaide have won their past four against Richmond by an average margin of 30.5 points. The two sides met on two occasions last year, the most recent of which came at the Adelaide Oval in Round 19, a 41-point victory to the Power.

Ollie Wines picked up 32 disposals in that match, while Mitch Georgiades and Willie Rioli combined for five goals. Rhyan Mansell booted three for the Tigers.

Connor Rozee has averaged 28 disposals in his past four matches against Richmond, while Tim Taranto has averaged 26 for the Tigers. Taranto has kicked five goals from his past three appearances against the Power.

Port Adelaide Form Analysis

Port Adelaide can be a bit hot and cold and were able to respond to a couple of beltings last year with wins the following week. This included an 84-point Elimination Final loss to Geelong before turning things around the next week in a Semi Final against Hawthorn with a three-point win.

They went 10-5 in games at the Adelaide Oval in 2024 for an overall record of 15-10. The Power rank poorly for total disposals (16th across their past 10 matches) but are strong at the clearances (3rd).

Of their 10 wins in Adelaide last year, five were by margins of 39.5 and above, including a 112 point romp over the eventual Grand Finalists, Sydney.

Ken Hinkley is unlikely to hit the panic button after last week. Esava Ratugolea is a possible inclusion, either in defense or attack. Rory Atkins and Jed McEntee, who were emergencies last week, could also feature, with Atkins a candidate for half-back and McEntee for half-forward.

Richmond Form Analysis

Richmond won only two matches in 2024 and most experts predicted a similar record in 2025, following an off-season that saw many of their big names either traded or delisted.

12 of their 21 losses in 2024 were by margins greater than 39.5. A further two matches were by exactly 39.

The Tigers rank 17th in the competition for goals scored in their last 10 matches and are in the bottom six for a host of other measures, including total disposals.

Richmond Team News

Jacob Blight is a doubt for this weekend due to an adductor issue. Jonty Faull (back) remains on the injury list after playing limited minutes in last Friday's VFL match and will continue to have restricted game time for the next few weeks. If Blight misses Saturday's game against Port Adelaide, the Tigers could bring in Jacob Koschitzke, give Campbell Gray his debut, or move James Trezise to a more defensive role and name Kaleb Smith. Tom Lynch is challenging his one-match ban on Tuesday night, with Samson Ryan or debutant Liam Fawcett as potential replacements if the suspension stands.
