Richmond can chalk up their third win of the season when they take on the West Coast Eagles at the MCG on Sunday.

Last year’s wooden spooners have surprised many pundits with two early season wins and head in with a win-loss record of 2-6, while the Eagles are yet to open their account and sit at 0-8.

The Tigers were no match for Hawthorn last weekend, going down by 65. Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper both had 25+ disposals but there was not much support for that duo.

On the same weekend, West Coast’s poor run saw them go down to Melbourne by 32. Their losses have been by an average margin of 47.5 points this season.

This is possibly their best chance yet to break through but they will have to do it without their key defender, Jeremy McGovern, who went down with concussion last weekend.

With Toby Nankervis in the ruck and Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper in good form at ground level, Richmond might just have enough to get on top in the middle of the ground, while the home ground advantage is another tick in their favour with the Tigers two wins this season coming in Melbourne.

Richmond have won four of the past five matches between the two sides but it was the Eagles that won the most recent battle by 39 points in Round 5 last season.

Jake Waterman booted six goals in that match, while Harley Reid (27 disposals) and Tim Kelly (29) found plenty of the footy. Richmond have won the past four matches between the two sides at the MCG.

Richmond Tigers Form Analysis

Richmond have won two of their eight matches. Their two wins have come against Carlton at the MCG in Round 1 by 13 points and Gold Coast in Round 6 by 11.

Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper are both averaging 25+ disposals, while Nick Vlaustin has been solid in defence. Scoring has been an issue and the Tigers rank 17th for points scored.

Noah Balta rolled his ankle late in the Hawthorn match and will be assessed at training. Kane McAuliffe, Jacob Koschitzke and Tyler Sonsie have some solid VFL form and will be considered to come into the side.

West Coast have lost all eight of their matches in 2025 with those coming at an average margin of 47.5 points.

They came close against Essendon at Optus Stadium in Round 6, going down by two. They are giving up an average of 112 points per game, ranking last for fewest points conceded. They are also last for point scored (65 per game) as well as disposals and clearances.

Jeremy McGovern will miss with concussion, while Archer Reid will be assessed at training after copping a knock to the leg in the Melbourne match. Tim Kelly returned against Melbourne but was quiet with 14 disposals.
