Richmond vs Collingwood Preview & Betting Tips

We are set for a blockbuster clash at the MCG with Collingwood taking on Richmond on Saturday afternoon. Richmond can shut the door on the minor premiership with a win over a finals rival this weekend.

Richmond

The title holders will love nothing more than to prove their premiership credentials in a finals-like atmosphere at the MCG. Richmond went through the motions last week, waltzing to a 54-point win over the hapless Saints.

Forward Jack Riewoldt benefited from Dustin Martin’s return to form with 4-goals against the Saints last week and loom as a key man for the Tigers.

Collingwood

Coach Nathan Buckley’s black and white army will be primed to claim another huge scalp this weekend. Collingwood continued their impressive run of form, winning eight of their last nine games. Darcy Moore and Steele Sidebottom are likely starters in one of the best midfields in the AFL.

The Pies are ranked first in the competition for uncontested possessions and will need to make that count against Richmond. Reigning Brownlow and Normsmith medallist Dustin Martin claimed 30 disposals last week and curbing his influence will be vital for Collingwood’s chances of an upset.

Match Up

This match has the potential to be an absolute blockbuster on Saturday afternoon. Richmond have a perfect record at the MCG in 2018 and defeated Collingwood in round 6, 16.17 (113) to 10.10 (70).

Collingwood continues to stay in the mix for a top-two finish this season and were impressive last weekend with a 66-point win against North Melbourne at the same venue. Richmond were untroubled in a 54-point win over St Kilda in round 18 and have the tools to finish Saturday afternoon with the premiership points. Dustin Martin was back to his best with 30 disposals against the Saints and at odds of 2.00 we think Dusty can give an encore performance this Saturday.

Key Statistics

  • Richmond have won 22 of their last 24 games at the MCG going back to 2017.
  • Brownlow medallist Dustin Martin has averaged 25.2 disposals per game this season.
  • Collingwood have lost 4 of their last 5 games to Richmond at the MCG.
  • Collingwood have won 8 of their last 9 games at the MCG this season.
  • Collingwood are ranked 1st for disposals in the AFL - 407 per game.

Verdict

The finals came early this weekend and the MCG is a worthy venue for two sides that in form and at the top of the ladder. Collingwood have been outstanding, winning five of their last six games at the MCG.

This clash will go a long way in determining in who grabs the minor premiership and Richmond’s perfect MCG record makes an irresistible case for backing the premiers to get the points this Saturday.

Handicap Bet: Richmond -15.5 @ 1.92
