St Kilda Saints vs GWS Giants Preview

St Kilda can push GWS in Gather Round, proving their recent form has been no fluke.

The Saints were pummelled in Round 1 by Adelaide but have responded with three stirring wins. They come off a 17-point victory over GWS last weekend, ending a bit of an Adelaide Oval hoodoo. This game is at Norwood, where they were victorious over Richmond last season.

GWS have also had success at the venue, registering a win in the 2023 Gather Round over Hawthorn. The Giants lost to that side a fortnight ago but cashed in against a weak West Coast outfit by 81 points last weekend.

Jesse Hogan was the star with nine goals and is one player the Saints will need to stop this weekend. But the rising side have been playing an attacking brand of football of late and can trouble the Giants.

Expect this to be a close one. Take the Saints with the start. Hogan looms large for the Giants but at the other end, Jack Higgins comes in with some good form and has played well against the Giants in the past.

Head to Head

GWS were one point winners the last time the two sides met with that match coming in Round 5 last season at Manuka Oval. The Giants have won the past two between the two sides but St Kilda won four prior to that.

Jack Steele has averaged 30 disposals in his past four against his former club, while Lachie Whitfield has averaged 29 for the Giants. Jack Sinclair (St Kilda) and Tom Green (GWS) are both going at 25+. Jack Higgins has kicked 10 goals from his past four matches against the Giants.

St Kilda Saints Form Analysis

St Kilda’s winning streak has yielded wins over Geelong (7 points), Richmond (82) and Port Adelaide (17). Their coach, Ross Lyon, who has never been renowned for an emphasis on attack, has developed a new-look Saints outfit that rank 3rd for goals scored this season.

Jack Higgins has kicked 12 goals this season, while Mason Wood has booted eight. Mich Owens has eight from three games.

The Saints have won eight of their past 10 matches. They rank 2nd in the competition for scores from turnovers across their last 15 matches

Jack Sinclair and Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera have been instrumental from half-back and are both going at 25+ per game, while the Bulldog recruit, Jack Macrae is going at 32 per game, ranking 3rd in the competition and 2nd for clearances.

St Kilda Saints Team News

St Kilda have a stack of players that are just about ready to return from injury, including Dan Butler, Jack Steele, Max King and Hunter Clark. This will cause some tricky decisions around who to drop, given the Saints have been in top form. A nice problem to have.

GWS Giants Form Analysis

Like St Kilda, the Giants are 3-1. Their loss came against the ladder leaders, Hawthorn, by 12 points in tough conditions in Launceston.

Two of the three Giants wins have been by big margins, a 52-point thrashing of Collingwood in Round 1 before their 81-point margin over West Coast. They booted 20 goals against the Eagles, with Jesse Hogan snagging nine.

Hogan has kicked 13 goals from his two games this season and has 54 in his last 12 matches, going at 4.5 per game.

On the disposal front, the Giants rank 4th for average disposals this season. Tom Green is averaging 34 disposals per game, while Lachie Whitfield is at 32.

GWS Giants Team News

Stephen Coniglio is a possible inclusion for the Giants after being rested due to soreness. Harvey Thomas and Toby McMullin have been in good form in the reserves and will come under consideration.
