St Kilda vs Richmond Preview

The Round 3 encounter sees St Kilda enjoy a golden chance to move their win-loss record into the positive territory.

The Saints sit 1-1 after their two matches so far and bounced back from a 63-point defeat in Round 1 against Adelaide to roll Geelong by seven in Round 2.

Ross Lyon’s side opened up a 41-point lead in the third quarter of that match before holding on. Nasiah Wanganeen Milera and Rowan Marshall starred, while Jack Macrae (35 disposals) and Jack Higgins (4 goals) were also prominent.

Richmond also sit 1-1 after upsetting Carlton in Round 1 by 13 points. They couldn't repeat those heroics last weekend, copping a reality check from Port Adelaide when going down by 72.

The young Tigers found it hard to find the footy and were dominated in the disposal count (297-478).

Look for the Saints to control this match with Wanganeen-Milera providing plenty of drive from the back-half. Jack Macrae will find a stack of the footy at his new club, while the former Tiger, Jack Higgins, will find himself among the goals again.

  • Seven of St Kilda's last eight matches at Marvel Stadium have resulted in wins
  • The Saints two matches this season have gone over the total points line
  • Jack Sinclair has averaged 30.5 disposals in his past four matches against Richmond
  • Jack Higgins has kicked 3+ goals in four of his past five matches

Head to Head

St Kilda have won the past three matches between the two sides by an average margin of just under 24 points. All those wins have been by less than 39.5.

Jack Sinclair has averaged 30.5 disposals in his past four matches against Richmond, while Tim Taranto has averaged 29 for the Tigers.

St Kilda Form Analysis

St Kilda had a win-loss record of 11-12 in 2024, closing off with three straight wins to add respectability towards the end of the home and away season. They went 7-5 at the venue last year. Seven of their last eight games at the venue have been wins, including last week’s clash against the fancied Geelong.

St Kilda played in just five matches out of 2024 that went above the 39.5 margin. The Saints defence was a highlight last year, ranking 5th for fewest points against, but scoring was an issue (15th).

On the disposal front, the Saints will look to be patient and chip the ball around before pulling the trigger. They rank 3rd for uncontested possessions in their last 10 matches, with Jack Sinclair and Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera leading the way, both going at 25+. Their livewire forward, Jack Higgins, has kicked 11 goals from his past four matches.

St Kilda Team News

St Kilda are set to lose Liam Stocker to a concussion. He joins a host of others on the sidelines, including Max King, who is still a couple of weeks away from a return. Arie Schoenmaker and Tobie Travaglia produced solid performances in the VFL and will be considered.

Richmond Form Analysis

Richmond have won just three matches since the start of 2024 and it is hard to see them improving too much on that record, despite their Round 1 upset over Carlton.

The Tigers are in rebuild mode and rank 17th for goals scored across their last 10 matches and 16th for points conceded.

Three of their past four losses have beeb by 48 points or more. 12 of their 22 losses since that start of 2024 have been by 39.5 points or above. Two of those were by 39.

Dion Prestia and Jayden Short sneak into the top 50 in the competition for disposals in their last 10 matches, going at around 24 per game.

Richmond Team News

Sam Banks heads into concussion protocols and will miss. The Tigers regain their key goalkicker, Tom Lynch, from suspension. Tyler Sonsie and Kane McAuliffe were both emergencies last weekend and produced big games at VFL level. Dion Prestia and Hugo Ralphsmith remain on the sidelines.
