- GWS Giants Team News
- Sydney were the best Scoring team in the AFL during the regular season averaging 14.3 Goals per game.
- The Swans have the 2nd best Ruck Win Percentage at 44.7% compared to the Giants 38% ranking them 12th in the league.
- GWS allow their opponents the 2nd most Centre Clearances of any team at 13 per game.
- Errol Gulden topped the Disposals in both games against the Giants this year.
Head to Head
Since the beginning of the 2019 season these two teams have met in one final, the 2021 Elimination Final which was won 74-73 by the Giants.
Looking at the regular season there have been 11 matchups in the same time frame with Sydney holding a commanding 7-4 lead in the head to head.
They won both matchups this season with winning margins of 29 and 27 points.
Sydney Swans Form
Sydney were looking shaky for a while there heading into the backend of the season.
A 10 game win streak was replaced by a run of five losses in six games before they were able to regather their composure and see out the season with three straight wins.
The Swans downfall coincided with injuries to star players with their depth not being up to the same standard. With those players more or less back on the park now it will be a massive boost for the minor premiers during September.
Sydney Team News
Justin McInerney has been close to being fit for a number of weeks but is finally expected to suit up again for the Swans. Same news for Tom Papley who has missed 6 weeks with an ankle injury.
Sam Wicks is still suspended and could return in Week 3 of finals at the earliest.
GWS Giants Form
The Giants dropped the last game of the season against the Bulldogs and were subsequently relegated to 4th on the ladder with Geelong getting the win on their end.
It is always difficult to find the motivation when you know your future is secured and the team could have seen it as an easier task to stay in Sydney and play the Swans rather than travel to Adelaide and face Port.
Prior to the loss to the Doggies the Giants had won 7 in a row with an average winning margin of 15 points.
GWS Giants Team News
Toby Bedford will undergo a fitness test closer to matchday but is unlikely to play. In a boost for the Giants Isaac Cumming and Jake Riccardi are both right to go.
Verdict
The Swans midfield and ruck can prove to be the difference in this derby.
