West Coast Eagles vs GWS Giants Preview

GWS will take another step towards September with a win over the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium.

The Giants find themselves outside of the top eight at the conclusion of Round 16 and will be seeking a percentage booster against the bottom placed West Coast Eagles, who have won just once match this season.

GWS come off the bye. Prior to the break, they rolled the Gold Coast Suns by seven points to take their win-loss record to 9-6. Percentage separates them from the likes of the Suns and the Western Bulldogs inside the eight.

Despite the need for GWS to bolster their percentage, West Coast can stick within the 1-39 point range here. Take the mid-season recruit, Tom McCarthy, in disposals markets, while Finn Callaghan should give the Giants plenty of drive in the midfield.

  • The Giants past 11 matches have been decided by 39.5 points or less.
  • West Coast’s past three losses have been by less than 39.5 points.
  • Finn Callaghan has averaged 30 disposals per game since returning from injury.
  • West Coast’s mid-season recruit, Tom McCarthy, has registered 60 disposals in his two matches.

Head to Head

GWS have won four of the past five matches between the two sides, including the Round 4 fixture this season at ENGIE Stadium by 81 points. Jesse Hogan was on fire in that match with nine goals.

The Giants were 65-point winners at Optus Stadium in Round 2 last season. West Coast have won four of five between the two sides at the venue. Jesse Hogan has kicked 16 goals in his past four matches against the Eagles. Toby Greene has kicked 10.

West Coast Eagles Form Analysis

West Coast have lost their past five. The last three of those have been by less than 39.5 points. Scoring continues to be an issue and the Eagles are averaging less than 60 points per game in that period.

In a forward line missing Oscar Allen and Jake Waterman, there have been a lack of key targets inside 50. Tyler Brockman with two goals was the only multiple goalscorer against Collingwood last week.

The Eagles won the disposal count against the Magpies but were beaten in clearance and contested possession. Liam Baker had 35 disposals, while mid-season draftee, Tom McCarthy, had 29. McCarthy has had 60 disposals in his two matches.

West Coast Eagles Team News

No injuries for West Coast to come out of the loss to Collingwood. Tom Cole and Matt Owies should be available for selection. Rhett Bazzo and Tom Gross have some solid form in the WAFL.

GWS Giants Form Analysis

GWS have won four of their past five. They have defeated top four candidates in their past two matches, handing Brisbane an 11-point defeat at the GABBA before their victory over Gold Coast.

Those wins have been built on some slick ball movement from defensive 50, ranking 2nd for defensive 50 to scores in the past five rounds. They are 4th for disposals in that period and top the competition for disposal efficiency.

Lachie Ash has had 30+ disposals in his past four matches. Finn Callaghan has averaged 30 in his two matches since returning from injury. Aaron Cadman and Jesse Hogan have capitalised up forward, kicking eight goals apiece in their last two matches.

GWS Giants Team News

A sore Jesse Hogan is in doubt to make the trip over and Lachie Whitfield will miss with concussion. Kieran Briggs and Stephen Coniglio are nearing a return from their respective injuries. Josh Fahey has been putting his hand up for selection with some strong VFL form.
