Atlanta enter the postseason having compiled an 89-73 record to finish third in the National League East.

The Braves started strongly, but a couple of losing skids over the summer meant they finished six games behind Philadelphia.

They did enjoy some good form in late September though, starting with back-to-back wins in Cincinnati.

Atlanta then rebounded from a loss in Miami with a five-game win streak that was finally ended by Kansas City, setting up a big double-header with the New York Mets on Monday.

The Braves split the series, bouncing back from an 8-7 loss with a 3-0 victory, and that meant they finished behind New York in the standings.

San Diego come into this playoff series having compiled a 93-69 regular-season record to finish second in the National League West.

The Padres started the season slowly, but really found their form over the summer as they marched into the playoffs.

They enjoyed a good run in the second half of September as they reeled off nine victories in a 10-game spell.

San Diego cooled off in Los Angeles as they failed to build on a 4-2 win over the Dodgers, losing 4-3 and 7-2, but they did bounce back in Arizona.

The Padres won the opening two games against the Diamondbacks, 5-3 and 5-0, before losing their regular season finale 11-2.
