Kansas City’s season is effectively over, but they are finishing the regular season with a flurry.

The Royals head to Houston having won seven of their last eight games – a run that includes two wins over the Astros.

They went on a five-game losing skid in early September, but stopped the rot with 11-10 and 7-1 wins at the Chicago White Sox.

Kansas City then followed up those victories with two home upsets of Houston, beating the Astros 4-2 and 10-8.

The Royals lost the final meeting, 7-1, but rebounded immediately to sweep Cleveland with 6-4, 7-6 and 6-2 wins.

Houston come into this series on the back of a loss, but in poor form with six defeats in their last nine games.

The Astros blew hot and cold through the first 10 days of September, going 5-4 in a nine-game spell, and since then their form has nose-dived.

They suffered back-to-back defeats in Oakland, losing 4-0 and 6-2 before avoiding a sweep with a 6-2 victory.

Houston then went out on the road and suffered 4-2 and 10-8 defeats to Kansas City, before once again avoiding a sweep with a series finale win, beating the Royals 7-1.

That trend continued for the Astros when they returned home to host Baltimore, as they responded to 8-7 and 9-5 defeats with a 2-1 win.
