Oakland entered this series on the back of a loss but in decent form having won four of their previous six games.

The A’s ended June on a miserable run, losing seven of their final eight games of the month.

They started July in promising fashion though, as they returned home to sweep the Los Angeles Angels in a three-game series.

Oakland reeled off 7-5, 5-0 and 5-0 victories over their West Coast rivals, but saw their three-game run end with a 3-2 defeat to Baltimore.

The A’s responded with a shock 19-8 victory over the Orioles, but they failed to follow that up as they were beaten 6-3 in the last game of that series.

Boston came into this series on a good run of form, having won six of their previous seven matchups.

The Red Sox were red hot through the middle part of June, winning 10 times in a 12-game spell, but cooled off late in the month with a three-game skid.

They snapped that losing sequence, and avoided being swept, as they beat San Diego 4-1 in the series finale at home.

Boston then backed that up on the road as they swept Miami in a three-game series, beating the Marlines 8-3, 7-2 and 6-5.

The Red Sox then travelled to New York and sandwiched a 14-4 defeat to the Yankees with 5-3 and 3-0 victories over their bitter rivals.
