The Padres dropped the opening game in Los Angeles, 7-5, but rebounded in impressive fashion with a 10-2 and 6-5 victories to give themselves the chance to wrap things up on Wednesday night.

They failed to take that chance though, as they were shut out in an 8-0 defeat, and that means they now head back to LA for a Game 5 decider.

San Diego booked their place in the postseason with a 93-69 record, finishing five games behind the Dodgers, and successfully negotiated the Wild Card round in two games.

The Padres hosted Atlanta for a best-of-three series, and they got the job done in two games as they beat the Braves 4-0 and 5-4.

Los Angeles return home having rescued their World Series dream with a Game 4 victory in San Diego.

The Dodgers made a winning start to this series as they took down the Padres, 7-5, but they lost their next two games, 10-2 and 6-5, to find themselves on the brink of elimination on Wednesday.

They needed to beat San Diego to stay in the postseason, and they did just that with an 8-0 victory that has taken this series back to LA for a winner-takes-all showdown.

Los Angeles had secured their place in the playoffs by putting together a league-best 98-64 record to finish top of the National League West.

The Dodgers finished the regular season five games clear of San Diego in the standings, and they came into the playoffs in good form having won nine of their final 11 regular season games.
