Alabama State are tipped to cover as a huge underdog in the first round of March Madness.

Auburn are expected to advance, but once they have opened up a healthy lead they could take their foot off the gas and allow the Hornets to steal a backdoor cover.

Auburn go into the national tournament in underwhelming form and on the back of a disappointing performance in the SEC tournament.

The Tigers dominated during the regular season as they won 27 of their first 29 games, beating a host of ranked teams along the way.

They lost their final two regular season games though, 83-72 to Texas A&M and 93-91 to Alabama in overtime, and that sent them into the conference tournament on a low note.

Auburn rebounded from those losses with a 62-57 victory over Mississippi in the quarter-finals, but their joy was short-lived.

The Tigers took on Tennessee in the semi-finals and suffered a 70-65 defeat at the hands of the Volunteers.

Alabama State Form

Alabama State enter this matchup having successfully navigated the First Four with their seventh straight victory.

The Hornets have not tasted defeat since they were beaten 70-68 by Bethune-Cookman back on February 24.

They rebounded from that loss with three straight wins to close out the regular season, and kept that winning run going as they claimed the SWAC crown.

Alabama State downed Texas Southern 84-79 and Grambling 64-62 to reach the final of the conference tournament, where they beat Jackson State 60-56.

The Hornets then made it seven-in-a-row in the preliminary round of March Madness, battling past Saint Francis PA in a 70-68 victory.

Verdict

Alabama State @ Auburn

Auburn are the better team and we fully expect them to advance, but they lack appeal as a spread bet.

Once they get ahead they could ease off, giving Alabama State the chance to maintain their strong record as a double digit underdog this season.
