The Aztecs entered the tournament on a four-game wins streak that earned them Mountain West Conference tournament title.
They kept that run going as they downed College of Charleston, 63-57, and Furman, 75-52, to set up a meeting with #1 Alabama in the Sweet 16 of March Madness.
San Diego then produced the biggest shock of the tournament, eliminating the Crimson Tide with a 71-64 victory.
The Aztecs’ next two wins proved to be nail-biters that went right down to the wire, with just one point settling each of them.
They beat Creighton 57-56 in the Elite Eight, and then booked their place in the final with a 72-71 victory over #25 Florida Atlantic on Saturday night.
Connecticut Form
Connecticut come into the National Championship Game having won 11 of their last 12 games.
The Huskies came up short in the Big East Conference tournament as they lost 70-68 to #6 Marquette, but their response at the national tournament has been tremendous.
They bounced back from that loss with a dominant 87-63 win over Iona in the first round of March Madness.
UCONN then downed Saint Mary’s (CA) 70-55, before sending Arkansas packing in the Sweet 16.
That set up an Elite Eight showdown with #9 Gonzaga, and they produced their best performance up to that date as they stormed to an 82-54 victory.
The Huskies then produced another dominant performance in the Final Four, jumping out to an ealy lead and never looking back as they beat #16 Miami FL, 72-59.
Verdict
San Diego State’s run has been impressive, but Connecticut have been a runaway train.
They are playing great basketball at both ends of the court, and that is likely to land them their first national championship since 2014.
