NBA Rookie Of The Year Betting Tips
Before betting on the NBA Rookie Of The Year market it is wise to look at the trends for this award, including when players were selected in the draft and what position they play.
Looking at draft selection first, being the first player selected in the NBA Draft is an honour, but that has not always translated into Rookie Of The Year honours too.
Since 2000, the number one draft pick has won Rookie Of The Year award on just seven occasions, and the last time that happened was when Ben Simmons claimed the honour in his first season with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2018.
The winner has tended to come from the first round of the draft though. Since 1990 only one player selected in the second round of the NBA Draft has gone on to be named Rookie Of The Year 12 months later – Malcolm Brogdon of the Milwaukee Bucks in 2017.
They have also tended to come from the early stages of the first round, with 15 of the last 20 Rookie Of The Year winners being selected in the top five of the draft.
But what about positions? One thing we have learned over the past 20 years is that it is difficult for one of the ‘bigs’ – a center or a power forward – to win this honour. It has happened just five times over the past 20 years, although Scottie Barnes of the Toronto Raptors did win this award in 2022.
But when it comes to position, it is the ball-handlers who have tended to claim the Rookie Of The Year award. 26 guards have won this award in its history, including Michael Jordan, with point guard leading the way with 19 successes.
