2023/24 Season Series
Melbourne United won 3-0
Melbourne United Form
Melbourne opened up round 7 with a win that has been very typical of United of the past two seasons. Melbourne relied on their poise and defence to lead them to victory, heading into beach quarter break with a slight lead and getting clutch shots from their stars when the game is on the line.
Jack White was once again the man for Melbourne with 14 points and 11 rebounds against Sydney, however, it was his two three pointers late in the game that won it for United and broke the back of Sydney, who are yet to find their game-breaking scorer.
United’s defence from beyond the arc was also impeccable, reducing Sydney to a below average 29% from three, keeping them to just 8 makes from 27 attempts, while United themselves shot at 38%.
It was clear to see that United have the best defensive structure in the NBL this season being the most difficult team to shoot against from inside and out with their opponents scoring on just 40.5% of their shots.
New Zealand Breakers Form
The New Zealand Breakers shocked the 36ers in their opening match of round 7 of Saturday, crushing Adelaide by 27 points in an all out offensive attack.
The opening quarter set the tone for the match with the Breakers going up by 15 33-19 which became a hole that was too big for even Montrezl Harrell and the 26ers to dig their way out of.
Parker Jackson-Cartwright led with 25 points, 11 points from the free-throw line, and 6 assists. The Breakers spread the floor well with Matt Mooney and Next Star Karim Lopez hitting from beyond the arc and both finishing with 17 points.
After coming home from the U.S the Breakers certainly looked fatigued, especially on offence, however over the past couple of games they have started to find their spots and have developed an offence that should be feared putting up an average of 101 points against Sydney and Adelaide, their two most recent opponents.
Matt Mooney has become arguable the most important player in the competition as he unlocks the strengths of Parker Jackson-Cartwright, just as we saw against Adelaide. Mooney is shooting at 41.7% from three and 46.1% from the field this season and is providing the perfect example of how two scoring-minded guards can work hand-in-hand to unlock an offence.

Verdict
This game should be closer than expected, so taking the road underdog with a 6.5-point start is the play.
