South East Melbourne Phoenix Form & Team News

South East Melbourne are licking their wounds after giving up a 15-point third quarter lead, allowing Brisbane back into the match on Thursday night to lose by eight points themselves 116-108.

The Phoenix were riding their pinpoint shooting in the first half where they could not miss a bucket, however in the third the momentum swayed and they started shooting bricks as Brisbane became hot.

Jordan Hunter got dominated by his opposing center Tyrell Harrison and finished the match with just 6 points and 1 rebound which hurt the Phoenix.

After developing a strong defensive presence under Josh King, South East Melbourne have lost their dominance giving up 103.33 points per game in their past three matches, despite having a 2-1 record.

Melbourne United Form & Team News

Melbourne are coming off a tough 106-93 loss, which became flattering with their bench playing the last 5 minutes of the match and bringing it back from a 21-point margin.

The hunger for Melbourne just wasn’t there while Illawarra understood the importance of the moment and wanted the victory.

The normally reliable hands of Matthew Dellavedova and Jack White were wayward with Delli hitting at just 18% from the field, while White only managed a 30FG%.

The concern for Melbourne also has to be how they have been playing defensively and many opportunities they are handing to their opponents.

United are averaging 100.25 opposition points per game in their past eight matches and slumping to 6th with a 44.5FG% to their opposition.

These defensive statistics put them mid-pack and it is unfamiliar territory for Dean Vickerman and his men, who now begin to rely more heavily on their offence getting the job done.

Verdict

Melbourne United will regain their stature at home and against South East Melbourne getting the win against the Phoenix at John Cain Arena.

Expect a high-scoring game with both teams out of sorts defensively at the moment and Jack White will get the better of the boards and record 10+ rebounds.
