South East Melbourne Phoenix Form

South East Melbourne are continuing to stake their claim as a NBL Championship contender, winning their past three matches, making it 6 wins from their past seven.

With import Derrick Walton ruled out for the season before the Phoenix match against the Taipans, Nathan Sobey took full control of the offence along with Matt Hurt, who is becoming one of the most exciting players in the NBL. Sobey dropped 26 points along with 7 rebounds, while Hurt scored 33 also with 7 rebounds.

The offence of the Phoenix is taking over the claim from Illawarra as the most potent in the NBL, averaging 105.9 points per game in their past 10 matches scoring 100+ points in 9 of ten matches.

Matt Hurt has scored 30+ points in his past 2 matches and is averaging 24.12 points per game in his past 8 games.

New Zealand Breakers Form

The Breakers got their second win in 14 matches in a back and forth battle with the JackJumpers at Spark Arena on Thursday.

Sam Mennenga had a career-best 29 points along with 9 rebounds and a block in a match that saw the return of New Zealand's key-man Parker Jackson-Cartwright.

PJC got a steal and the first bucket of the game in his first appearance after a 5-game suspension and went on to record 8 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists.

His combination with Matt Mooney who had 11 points 11 assist and 4 steals in the game, was a highlight for the Breakers who are waiting for the duo to flourish together.

While the Breakers are still a mathematical chance to make the play-in they will still need a miracle if they are to play in the postseason, needing to win the rest of their matches and a stack of results to go their way.

Verdict

South East Melbourne’s rise from the fire is tipped to continue beating the Breakers with Nathan Sobey lighting it up for the Phoenix with another 20+ point game.
