Spain opened EuroBasket 2025 in style, beating Great Britain 85-70 and Germany 79-60 in convincing fashion.
Their form dipped slightly in the third group match, where they needed overtime to edge Sweden 78-75. Alba Torrens top-scored with 20 points but was inefficient from the field (5/15 FG).
La Roja had to come from behind in the quarterfinals, overturning an 11-point deficit to beat Czech Republic 88-81. Raquel Carrera was outstanding, delivering 31 points, eight rebounds, and two assists, including a perfect 19/19 from the free-throw line.
In the semifinals, Spain pulled off a huge upset by eliminating tournament favorites France 65-64. Awa Thiam was named player of the match, finishing with 21 points, nine rebounds, and three assists.
Belgium Form
Belgium have looked every inch the reigning champions, breezing through the group stage with three dominant wins.
They opened with an 81-52 win over Portugal and followed that up with an 87-53 demolition of Montenegro. In the group decider, Belgium defeated Czech Republic 72-60, with Emma Meesseman putting up 20 points, six assists, and eight rebounds.
The quarterfinal clash against Germany ended in another convincing victory (83-59), Meesseman again starring with 30 points, nine rebounds, and four assists.
Belgium were tested by Italy in the semifinals but managed to edge them 66-64, with Meesseman contributing 15 points, 12 rebounds, and three assists in a clutch performance.
Verdict
Spain deserve credit for reaching the final and upsetting France, but Belgium are a level above in terms of consistency and individual brilliance. With Emma Meesseman in red-hot form, I expect Belgium to lift the trophy once again tonight in Piraeus.
