Mystery punter wins big after Gary Woodland's clinches US Open title at Pebble Beach

When Gary Woodland rolled in a 30-foot birdie putt to clinch the 2019 U.S. Open and his first major title, one Westgate sportsbook bettor was also rejoicing along with the American.

The anonymous punter claimed an impressive $40,000 on a mere $500 bet that Woodland would emerge victorious at Pebble Beach Golf Links.

It was not all smooth sailing for the gambler as Woodland held a one shot lead heading into the final round. With two time defending champion Brooks Koepka four shots behind and gaining momentum, the punter must have believed his bet would not come through.

Woodland, however, held off Koepka's late surge to secure a 13-under par victory, three shots ahead of the reigning PGA champion.

We write very little on futures from sharp players but one sharp player who usually bets matchups bet Woodland at 80-1,” Westgate sportsbook manager Jeff Sherman said.

Despite that payout, the Westgate and other Las Vegas books fared well on the year’s third major.
“We did well on in-progress, outrights, props and matchups,” Sherman said. “It was a really solid tournament across the board for us.”
