Punter lands $52k backing Japan to upset Germany at World Cup
- Japan beat Germany 2-1 at the World Cup on Wednesday
- Stake punter placed $1,000 on Japan to win when they trailed 1-0
- Doan & Asano struck in final 15 minutes as they turned it around
One wise football punter is celebrated after Japan’s shock win over Germany at the World Cup.
A routine win looked to be on the cards when Ilkay Gundogan fired the Germans in front from the penalty spot.
A Stake customer did not show the same confidence though, and backed their belief to the tune of $1,000.
The football fan placed a bet on Japan to turn it around and win the match at odds of 52/1.
They then looked on as Ritsu Doan stepped off the bench to grab the equaliser 15 minutes from time.
Fellow substitute Takuma Asano then completed the comeback when he blasted home the winner eight minutes from time.
When that shot hit the back of the net it was not just the Japanese fans who were celebrating.
One Stake customer was bracing for the arrival of $52,000 into their bank accounts thanks to a successful World Cup punt.
