Horse Racing pick five bet wins woman US$1.2m

The 144th Kentucky Derby was lucky for some as Justify won the most popular horse race and longest running sporting event in the United States.

Margaret Reid won a pick five bet where bet US$18 and selected the winners of five horse races with the Kentucky Derby being the last.

Justify was the favourite at 3-1, but Ms Reid managed to pick a 40/1 winner in one of the earlier races to significantly boost the odds.

“It was a big ticket because it was a couple of long shots in the middle of it,” she said. “It was an amazing feeling yes, that you won a really big, like a really big ticket. A mini-lotto if you will.”

Ms Reid’s haul was just short of the windfall collected by Justify’s owners who collected a cool US$1.4m.
After going on an extended holiday, Ms Reid plans to invest her new found wealth and fund her daughter's college education.

Ms Reid is a devoted horse racing fan and said she carefully analysed the form and odds before making her pick five bet. “I understand the programme and I can break down the races,” she said.

“It doesn't always work out, but sometimes it does.”

We all know the feeling where it doesn’t work out, but most of us can only dream of walking away with over a million dollars.

Congratulations Margaret!
