Andy Ruiz Jr vs Anthony Joshua Preview, Predictions, Betting Tips & Live Stream

Andy Ruiz Jr makes the first defence of the WBA, WBO, IBF and IBO world titles he sensationally took from Anthony Joshua when the fighters face off in the contracted rematch on December 7, 2019 in Saudi Arabia.

Despite his seventh round stoppage defeat at Madison Square Garden in the first fight, Joshua has been installed as the bookies favourite at 1.30 to claim victory, although those odds are a far cry from the 1.04 price ahead of the first fight.

Andy Ruiz Jr did not go along with the script in the first fight at Madison Square Garden on June 1. Given four weeks to prepare following the failed drug tests of original opponent Jarrell Miller, Ruiz was meant to make Anthony Joshua look good in his American debut.

He looked to be filling that role when he was put down in the third round, but decided to go rogue when he responded with a barrage as Joshua went in for the finish, putting the champion down twice in the same round.

AJ never recovered and after Ruiz put him down twice again in the seventh round, the American sealed one of the greatest shocks in boxing history.

Many of us were fooled by Ruiz’s doughy exterior, but underneath the layers of flab is a fighter with fast hands, solid power and a fine amateur pedigree. The only loss of his professional career came in a contentious majority decision defeat to Joseph Parker.

Given more time to prepare, there is the prospect of Ruiz providing an even sterner challenge to Joshua in the rematch.

Additionally, as history shows, the victor in the first fight often comes out on top in the rematch: he knows how to beat his opponent so has the gameplan and confidence to produce a repeat performance.

The dream American debut inside the ‘Mecca of boxing’ quickly turned into a nightmare for Anthony Joshua and he enters the rematch with his career on the line.

Win in Saudi Arabia – preferably by knockout – and he can view the loss to Andy Ruiz Jr as a mere blip and a learning experience. Joshua has admitted that he was looking beyond Ruiz, but there is no chance he is making that mistake for a second time.

Given all that he has achieved so far, it is easy to forget that Joshua is still a relative novice. He and Ruiz are the same age, but the Briton as contested 11 fewer fights.

Still, there is enormous pressure on Joshua to deliver in the rematch, and the defeat should give him the jolt he needs after having it easy for much of his career – the Wladimir Klitschko fight aside.

After showing his naivety by rushing in to finish Ruiz in the first fight, Joshua is sure to take a more measured approach: create openings, set traps, and pick his shots. He has an enormous size and reach advantage over Ruiz and he will make it count in the rematch.

Ruiz will give Joshua openings and the challenger will look to unload his flattening power when he does. There is so much on the line for Joshua, but he will be far more prepared and focused for Ruiz than he was in June.

Andy Ruiz Jr vs Anthony Joshua Betting Odds

Andy Ruiz Jr is the outsider in this one despite beating Joshua last time. The Mexican can be backed at 3.40 to in again.

Anthony Joshua is favoured to get back on track at 1.33 to win. I think this one could be decided in the latter stages, over 7.5 total rounds my best bet at 1.83 and Joshua to win between rounds 7-12 m value bet at 4.00.

Andy Ruiz has proved he needs to be taken seriously and that is exactly what Anthony Joshua will do. Joshua should eliminate the silly mistakes and lapses in focus from the first fight and get the job done. After a cagey first few rounds, I expect Joshua to claim a mid-to-late stoppage win.
