Errol Spence Jr vs Shawn Porter Preview, Predictions, Betting Tips & Live Stream

Errol Spence Jr and Shawn Porter meet in a welterweight unification world title fight in Los Angeles in the early hours of Sunday 29 September, 2019. Spence puts his unbeaten record and IBF belt on the line against WBC champion Porter, with bookmakers heavily favouring Spence to win the fight at 1.20.

What: Errol Spence Jr vs Shawn Porter for the IBF and WBC welterweight world titles

Height: 5’ 9.5” (177cm)
Reach: 72” (183cm)

Looking back on Errol Spence Jr’s last fight against Mikey Garcia, it is almost embarrassing that many bookmakers priced both fighters at 1.91 to win the fight. What transpired was a lop-sided Spence masterclass as he proceeded to win all but one round, with Garcia lucky to see the final bell.

It was the latest comfortable outing in a career of comfortable outings for the unbeaten American, who is yet to be seriously troubled in any of his 25 fights.

Among the world-level fighters who have had no answers to Spence’s blend of power, precision and movement are Chris Algieri (5th round KO), Kell Brook (11th round KO), and Lamont Peterson (retired before the seventh round).

In the fourth defence of his IBF world title, Spence is expected to face his biggest challenge against WBC holder Shawn Porter. Spence is not only fast and powerful, but extremely durable with an iron-clad defence and a top-class ring IQ. He also has the height and reach advantage over Porter.

If Spence brings his A-game to the ring against Porter then he should be leaving the Staples Center as the unified welterweight world champion.

Shawn Porter History, Form & Fighting Style

Shawn Porter is certainly not a fighter to shy away from fighting the best, and for the most part the American has come out on top.

Porter’s 20-fight winning start to his career was interrupted by a split decision draw against Julio Diaz, whom he defeated in the rematch to win the IBF world title. That began a run of fights against top-level opposition.

Former champions Devon Alexander and Paulie Malignaggi were both defeated, before Porter suffered his first loss in 2014 in one of the greatest welterweight contests in recent years, losing a majority decision to Kell Brook.

Porter bounced back with wins over Erick Boone and Adrien Broner, only to taste defeat again in a unanimous points loss to Keith Thurman. Since then, though, Porter has beaten Andre Berto, Adrian Granados for the vacant WBC title, Danny Garcia, and Yordenis Ugas.

The reason I’ve highlighted Porter’s CV is to show how he has fared against elite-level fighters. His two defeats were against the best fighters he has faced: a prime Brook and a pre-injury Thurman.

Spence, however, is on another level entirely to those fighters and Porter will likely need to find a once-in-a-lifetime performance to leave the Staples Center with the belts.
