Muhammad Ali History


Muhammad Ali was born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr in 1942 and is widely regarded as the greatest boxers of all time. “The Greatest” won gold in the light heavyweight division at the 1960 Summer Olympics aged 18 and turned professional later that year. 

He beat Sonny Liston in a major upset to win the world heavyweight championship in 1964. Ali is the only three-time lineal champion in the heavyweight division. 

Muhammad Ali was involved in several historic boxing matches and feuds, most notably with Joe Frazier at the Thrilla in Manila. His fight against George Foreman known as The Rumble in the Jungle watched by a record estimated television audience of 1 billion viewers.

Joe Frazier History


Joseph William Frazier was born in 1944 and competed from 1965 to 1981. "Smokin' Joe" won gold at the 1964 Summer Olympics before becoming the undisputed heavyweight champion from 1970 to 1973.

Frazier defeated Muhammad Ali by unanimous decision in the Fight of the Century in 1971. In 1973 Frazier lost his title when he was defeated by George Foreman. He later lost a rematch against Ali with his last world title challenge coming in 1975 when he was beaten by Ali in the Thrilla in Manila. 

Smokin' Joe retired in 1976 following a second loss to Foreman, made a comeback in 1981 and fought once more before retiring for good. He lost to only two fighters, twice to Muhammad Ali and twice to George Foreman.
