Regis Prograis History, Form and Fighting Style

Nationality: United States
Age: 30 (24/01/1989)
Professional Record: 24-0-0 (20 KOs)
Height: 5’ 8” (173cm)
Reach: 67” (170cm)
Stance: Southpaw

Regis Prograis has established himself as one of the leading smaller-weight fighters on the planet and his performances in the WBSS have only cemented that status.

The unbeaten American outclassed Terry Flanagan in the quarter-finals to win by a wide points decision having dropped the Englishman in the eighth round. He then dished out six-and-a-half rounds of punishment before stopping Kiryl Prlikh in the semi-finals to set up his meeting with Josh Taylor.

Prograis is fast, strong and accurate, but his biggest strengths lie in his movement – bobbing, weaving and constantly moving to land shots from different angles. He has proved near-impossible to pin down and has never hit the canvas in his professional career.

Prograis does give the height and reach advantage to Taylor, although he holds much more experience with nine more pro fights and 20 more rounds under his belt.

However, he will be in unchartered territory having never fought outside the United States before. How he adapts to the different conditions and being the away fighter are likely key reasons as to why the odds are closer than they otherwise would be if the bout was taking place across the Atlantic.

With that said, top-class fighters are able to adapt to their surroundings and Prograis is the sort of fighter who should revel in the chance to showcase his skills to a new audience.

Josh Taylor History, Form and Fighting Style

Nationality: United Kingdom
Age: 28 (01/02/1991)
Professional Record: 15-0-0 (12 KOs)
Height: 5’ 10” (178cm)
Reach: 69½”  (177cm)
Stance: Southpaw

Josh Taylor has developed a habit of ending fighters’ unbeaten records during his short career so far. First up, he produced a stunning performance in 2017 to stop Ohara Davies in the seventh round.

Taking his place in the WBSS, Taylor ended Ryan Martin’s unbeaten run in the quarter-finals with another seventh round stoppage, before becoming a world champion in just his 15th fight when he outpointed Ivan Baranchyk in the semi-finals to take the IBF title.

It has been a sharp and fast rise for the Scotsman and he has handled every step up in challenge like a seasoned pro.

However, there is no denying that Prograis represents a significant upgrade in class compared to any fighter he has previously faced. Based on their careers so far, it is difficult to see how Taylor can trouble the American – perhaps it would be a different matter if Taylor had another five or six fights worth of experience.

The Scot does have the height and reach advantage and will enjoy the vast majority of support. Will that be enough against a class act like Prograis?

Regis Prograis vs Josh Taylor Betting Odds

The bookies have this as a close fight, with Regis Prograis priced at 1.61 and Josh Taylor at 2.30 to win the fight. The draw is available at 23.00.

Taylor’s fine displays in the WBSS have inevitably led to his current price, but Prograis is a classy operator and should win this. I think this fight will go the distance so Prograis to win by decision or technical decision is my value bet.
