The traditional warm-up act for the Gold Cup is the Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle. Several winners of the Albert Bartlett have gone on to run in future Gold Cups, including Bobs Worth and Minella Indo, who won both races during their careers.

Here's our free guide and tips for the 2023 Albert Bartlett.

Finding the winner of the Albert Bartlett is notoriously difficult. In the last decade, just two winners have returned a single-figure SP. Two 33/1 shots and a 50/1 outsider has won during that time. Even last year's winner The Nice Guy, who carried an unbeaten record into day four of the Cheltenham Festival, was an unfancied 18/1 shot in the betting.

One thing I can be fairly certain about is that it's unlikely we'll see a British horse come out on top. Irish raiders have won seven of the last nine renewals of the Albert Bartlett and, when the final field is confirmed, I wouldn't be surprised if Ireland accounted for 60% or 70% of the runners.

Corbetts Cross has won over three miles this season and proved his class with a Grade Three victory over two miles last time out. Embassy Gardens ran out a clear-cut winner on his most recent start and, despite his recent defeat at Clonmel, Hiddenvalley Lake is still considered a leading contender.

Monty's Star, who beat his stablemate at Clonmel, remains open to plenty of improvement. Sandor Clegane looks tailormade for this test of stamina, while Gordon Elliott - who looks set to play a strong hand in this Grade One - has high hopes for Three Card Brag, Favori De Champdou and Absolute Notions.

Of the British runners, Rock My Way is worth a mention, given he boasts course-winning form. Stay Away Fay could throw his hat into the ring for Paul Nicholls, if inexperience doesn't catch him out.

Albert Bartlett 2023 Tip 1 - Search For Glory

Given the size of the field and the unpredictable nature of this race, I'm happy to place a couple of small each-way bets on runners sitting at longer prices. The first name on my shortlist is SEARCH FOR GLORY, who finished third behind Hiddenvalley Lake and Monty's Star in that Grade Three at Clonmel.

An impressive winner of both a point-to-point and a bumper, Gordon Elliott pitched his six-year-old straight into a red-hot maiden at the Leopardstown Christmas Festival on his hurdles debut, where Search For Glory stayed on to finish third behind Ballymore contender Good Land, having found himself outpaced over two-and-a-half miles around that speedy track.

Jordan Gainford's mount was well-backed against the two De Bromhead runners at Clonmel and Search For Glory raced alongside the pace-setting Hiddenvalley Lake throughout. As de Bromhead's duo pushed on, Search For Glory looked to be going flat-out, but still managed to cling onto his rival's coattails all the way up the home straight to cross the line a very close third.

Search For Glory may still be a maiden over hurdles, but I'm not sure that particularly matters in a race like the Albert Bartlett. He's a young, improving horse, who boasts Graded experience and will have no trouble seeing out this trip.

Albert Bartlett 2023 Tip 2 - Letsbeclearaboutit

Experience can count for plenty in a race like the Albert Bartlett. One who we've seen on plenty of occasions is Gavin Cromwell's eight-year-old LETSBECLEARABOUTIT, who ran five times during his bumper season, winning on three occasions while also finishing second to both Sir Gerhard and Kilcruit - the first and second from that season's Champion Bumper.

Having spent 580-days on the sidelines, Letsbeclearaboutit finished second behind American Mike on his return to action over hurdles. Luke Dempsey's mount then placed fourth behind Hiddenvalley Lake in a Grade Three and a good second behind Favori De Champdou in a Grade Two at Limerick over Christmas.

Following a 22-length romp in a maiden hurdle at Punchestown in January, Cromwell said he'd like to run Letsbeclearaboutit in the Albert Bartlett. Cromwell won this race with Vanillier two years ago and if this strong stayer was to hit the frame, or even claim top honours, it wouldn't be a big surprise.
