County Hurdle History

The County Hurdle is one of the oldest handicaps at the Cheltenham Festival, having first been run in 1920.

Vincent O'Brien's name was added to the title of the County Hurdle, soon after the legendary trainer retired in 1994.

Many famous jockeys have enjoyed success in the County Hurdle. Fulke Walwyn, Pat Taaffe, Tommy Carberry and Fred Winter all celebrated victories in this handicap between 1936 and '63.

The most successful jockey in County Hurdle history is Ruby Walsh, who rode four winners of the race during his glittering career.

Paul Nicholls and Willie Mullins had been tied at the top of the trainer standings heading into 2020, with four victories apiece.

Mullins then moved ahead of his British rival when Grand Roi bolted up in impressive fashion to win the 2020 County Hurdle.
