Cheltenham Gold Cup History

First run in 1924, the Cheltenham Gold Cup is the most valuable non-handicap chase in the UK and it’s one of the most popular betting races.

A test of endurance, the 5,331 journey was actually first run on a flat course in 1819 but was converted to a steeplechase on 12 March 1924 when taking place on the old course at Cheltenham.

The race was dominated in the early stages by Golden Miller, which scored wins from 1932 to 1936 and it would also capture the 1934 Grand National

It would switch to the “new course” in 1959 and it would soon be dominated by Arkle, which scored three consecutive wins in the Cheltenham Gold Cup between 1964 to 1966. Arkle started 1.10 for his third and final win.

In 1983 trainer Michael Dickenson trained all five remaining horses to finish the race. Bregawn, Captain John, Wayward Lad, Silver Buck and Ashley House all finished the race and gave the trainer and improbable result which will likely never be achieved again.

The Cheltenham Gold Cup and the entire festival was called off in 2001 due to the foot and mouth outbreak. Substitute races would take place at Sandown.

Jockey Pat Taaffe has scored four wins in the race with his latest coming in 1968 aboard Fort Leney, which was trained by five-time winner Tom Dreaper.
